Modernising the front of this house...
Hi,
Looking for some inspiration on modernising a house we're moving into soon. I do like render, but wouldn't want the cost of turning all UPVC windows slate grey. We do plan on changing the front door, but trying to find a solution to getting rid of the cladding, as we feel it's out-dated.
Any advice appreciated.

Comments (1)You could replace the tiles with wooden cladding (cedar is lovely), cover the bricks with white render and either paint the upvc windows grey (with specialist paint) or replace with grey. Comments (16)Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? Comments (9)Yes I really didn't like the tv in the bay window, since we've got a bay window I'd like to make use of it, I think it's a lovely feature to have in the house. The hallway effect idea is perfect as well, I did think about a sofa but thought it would look a bit too "there" however with the console table, I think the focus would be off of the sofa plonked there! Thank you! We'd love to be able to do all the rooms in one hit but we're going to have to space them out, all of our money went on our deposit (it's expensive being a first time buyer) we also have no furniture, but if we can plan out what we want for the overall home that should help a little. Comments (3)Hello! Love the new driveway!! I think rendering the bottom and painting white would look really nice with the contrast of the darker roof tiles. To match the white cladding, if it is possible it might be worth looking at doing something similar on the roof extension on the other side as well. Darker grey/black windows would then make a fabulous contrast! To finish it off some lovely plants would look fab against the wall. There are some great images online for inspiration! 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI agree, the front of the house is a little flat, and the porch doesn't do it much favours. I also agree that the bay window is a dated and a little out of place. You could add vertical composite cladding on the right instead of render.
Bring out the porch and make it stand out, so that the frontage isn't so flat.
Put in a nicer driveway and make more of the front garden and pathway. Houzz is having problems loading photo's AGAIN.........so can't put up the ones of driveways, maybe they'll fix the problem soon.tristan1990 thanked User

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoSubtle changes might do the job (okay, maybe changing a bay to flat window isn't really subtle, but it does update the look). And if this is not the main front door, just if, it shouldn't look like one, so I've turned them into french doors.
