What is the surround material?

It looks like a gas insert, is that correct?

Hello Lori. Yes it's a Bellfires inset gas fire, so much of the heat will be discharged from the front of the fire. The wall material needs to be non-combustible and temperature stable.

This photo was taken in Holland where the fires are manufactured. Dutch installations are often carried out using a 50mm thick Skamotec225 board, but the construction process requires a high level of planning and experience to get right. We favour concrete board for chambers and wall lining. The brand that we carry it in stock is stable, strong and has a decorative surface one side, it's ideal for this kind of job.

Thank you so much for answering my question. I need a bit of a design drawing because there is a TV above the insert. If I were to use your material do you have a recommendation who could do the design?

Tricky one, I'm not usually a fan of 1930s fireplaces but this one is better than most. It really depends on the style you are creating in the room, it's never going to look contemporary or cool but it is an original period feature. If I could make it work I would be inclined to keep it but if it was restricting my design choices too much I would get rid of it!

Hi, I was just wondering what material the surround of the fire place is? The neutral/grey theme for the room sounds great. There's some really good neutral paints available at the moment, I love the selection of paints Farrow and Ball have to offer via Homebase. In regards to the fireplace I wouldn't paint it unless you know its your only option and depending on the material of the surround. If so I wouldn't paint it the exact colour of the walls, maybe a couple of shades darker to make it a feature, not something you are trying to conceal. You could reconsider your colour scheme if its not possible to paint/change the fireplace, making the chimney wall an off white as to not clash with the bronze. You could still have parts of the room a very pale neutral grey, or channel the neutral scheme through soft furnishings and accessories. I hope you get a good result either way, good luck.

Puffinrock, first of all congratulations on getting through to the last stage! Most of all - a 1915 house is wonderful - so much style! I definitely think your plans would be great - a slightly pitched canopy - to direct rainfall - can be very helpful. Dependent on your style you could also add a lattice trellis side next to each timber for a more English cottage look (then later work in a rambling rose or wisteria or honeysuckle. Without the trellis is more modern, guessing by your front door, perhaps pared down and you can decide whether to paint the timber. Please post after shots! Hope this is helpful. We are about to do the exact same thing for a client. Try to bring the canopy out as much as possible without it looking disproportionate so that you can shelter and remove boots and shoes etc without getting wet in rain or snow. Good luck x

Ooo thanks so much for the response. I love these ideas. I prefer the soft white look of the limestone. But the Carrara marble would be more authentic to the era. So it’s tough to decide. Particularly like the last fireplace surround on your first post (the London fields house). That looks to be a Carrara marble. Do you think that option would go with our fireplace insert tiles? As the carrara has grey flecks in there. Closer up image of the tiles below - the base colour in the tiles is a dark brown. Thanks
