'Bean' plant? Does it need support?

Hello! I had a white 'bean seed' which I was given and then planted. I have no description of what kind of plant this is beyond this and, as you can imagine, there are many types of bean plant that grow differently.

This one grew very quickly and I've had to put a support in to stop it flopping over.

My question : does this plant need a support or is it meant to hang? Will I need a trellis? Or will I just need to keep the support there until it can support itself?

Any advice on what type of plant this is that you can give would be greatly appreciated!

All beans look the same to me too, but I've grown a few types and they've all been against fences/up a trellis/beanpole wigwam. When it needs go out just put it in against some sort of support in a sunny spot and see what happens!

My dad grew no end of beans in his garden, and most of them were twiners and needed a support to grow up. He used to create a long wigwam frame from bamboo canes tied together and tied in the plants as they grew. Dead easy and cheap to do. If the bean was white then it may be a haricot or a cannellini bean. Dwarf beans do not climb but stay short and bushy. Beans are not frost hardy, so don’t plant outside until the last frosts have gone. Here’s a similar frame to my dad’s:

Hi jonathandb1972, yes our architect suggested and prefers accessing the ensuite via the changing room too, but I'm not convinced. It will reduce usable wall space in the changing room and walking through one room to get to another just feels wrong (if you know what I mean!).

Agree with comments about waiting - definitely until you are more or less done on the outside of the house and are onto the 'inside' trades. Cannot emphasise enough living with the garden for a year to see where the sun is and isn't, how wet or how dry it is, what kind of soil you have, how windy or sheltered it is. This will inform a lot of your decisions about what to put where. Also think about are you overlooked, do you want some privacy? How big do you need you seating area - table of 6 table of 8? Relaxed seating to enjoy the view (sofas etc). It looks a fantastic plot and agree about landscaping more nearer the house and leaving some of it wilder. For this year, You can do a huge amount with pots and annuals - all the catalogues (J Parkers, Fothergills, Thompson & Morgan etc) are having sales now and there are some real bargains. Or as you are probably pushed for time, just buy them this year from garden centres. They will cheer you up no end when they all come into flower in the summer. If you do nothing else maybe grow some sweet peas on 5 canes in a pot and the colour and scent will lift the spirits (so speaks a veteran of doing up houses and currently just about to start another!). Good luck - design is a process and never does this apply more than to gardens. Keep us posted!

Hi, so yours are only babies. The pictures I shared are not my fathers garden as he has passed away. I just remember them climbing up the poles like Jack and the Beanstalk! He then left the beans to dry out a bit before shelling them. Mum would freeze the beans for future use. Those beans were the best ever! I don’t know about growing them indoors, but you could transplant them into a big pot with canes tied at the top. I suppose putting near the window and keeping them well weathered will help. If they bend towards the light you can turn the pot around each day maybe? If they are the bush variety then you won’t need the canes. Hope it works out. 😊
