What to do with this fireplace?
Comments (68)I love bellesum's fireplace too, but would have reservations about a 'modern country' style living room in a Victorian conversion. I also quite like your existing fireplace, but not in your room! Its height makes the room seem uncomfortably tall and narrow. I'd advise a refit with a new wider firebox, broader surround and just mantle height. I can't believe I'm suggesting a conventional refit! Shame on me!...See MoreWhat to do with old fireplace?
Comments (12)I think you could probably look at taking out that bit of red... Plasterboard? Leave the surround! Marble surround is fantastic and you could really open up the fireplace more actually.. You could take out the small grate and have the entire recess open and then buy stylish basket that is bigger even if you don't use it. You will see what the width is when you uncover the front. Just make sure the lintel is intact which I am sure it is... I had to add another to be sure. See image.. You see what I mean about being open.. Also I was not as lucky as you as I found my marble mantle piece bashed up in pieces at the back of the recess... I could not afford to replace it... So it's a piece of wood and two brackets! You have red above the picture rail, so I would keep that and paint the chimney breast a deep deep red that compliments what is already in situ. Also raise the mirror slightly or even replace with something a little bigger in height. : ))...See MoreNeed help with what to do with fireplace.
Comments (40)Hi again! For anyone that's interested, I have finally managed to have a go at my varnished stone fireplace and am pretty happy with the results… It's not perfect but makes a huge difference in terms of light in the room and cost me next to nothing! I used a tiny bit of annie sloan paint to dull and lighten the stone - my mum sent me leftovers of 'paris grey' that she had used on some furniture. The link I had found which described the painting process belonged to an artist, so I was aware that my results would differ quite drastically from hers, but I'm still happy! I also had a new mantlepiece made from old planks that my boyfriend has had stashed away for years - a carpenter we often use put it together for the equivalent of about US$10. We don't own the house so I haven't waxed the paint on the stone (meaning it can be washed off with water and a light scrub) and the new mantlepiece is literally slotted on top of the old one and discreetly screwed in place. It is no huge home improvement project but made a big difference to the feel of the room using minimal time, money and mess… Now just the rest of the room to decorate…!...See MoreI need your advise in what should I do with this fireplace? Thank you
Comments (4)Hi HU-416843511, if you are looking to completely take the fireplace out as mentioned you would need to get this wall plastered. We would still recommend having a focal point so an updated style fireplace would still work in the room to help create a focal point within the room.
