Design Dilemma Kitchens Living Rooms

Help! Need a better layout for our kitchen and living area!

Hi all - we recently welcomed a little baby girl into our family, dramatically changing the needs and usage of our living space in our east London terraced house.

We spend most of our time in this room cooking, dining or hanging out. The set up was initially fine but we are now finding our furniture doesn’t suit the space that well and is not conducive to having people over for meals and lounging.

I’d love any input for how we could change the layout of the room.

In the kitchen, we can move the island. I wonder if moving a table in the middle instead to serve double duty as seating and counter space would be an option?

In the living area, I wonder if we should get a smaller dining table (that can be extended) and a different type of sofa maybe with accompanying arm chairs?

I’d welcome any ideas!!!

First congratulations on your baby!

You didn't mention if the kitchen would stay. If the kitchen goes, I'd keep the room as open as possible, which means compact kitchen and thus real thoughtful planning. You'd like to keep an eye on your kid the upcoming years.

What's on the wall opposite the stove? (a floorplan with measurements would help a lot to receive great ideas, btw)

I'd place a dining table in your kitchen. This way you can have a cot in the living area. And in about 6 to 8 months, your little one will be sitting with you at the table, making a mess.

Note: your tv is way too high (no neckpain while watching?) and too large.

And is this the only reception room aka living room aka great room? :)

Congrats from me too. I agree with getting rid of the island and having a kitchen table with room at the end for a highchair. This will give you loads of space in the living area for a travel cot/ toddler toy area/small table and chair etc as your child grows.

Hi!! I would recommend shutting off the access through to the living room and having the closed off kitchen to give u a U shape. I like a separate space for cooking and as you say the noise level from appliances and smells too. I have done a quick design for you, to give an idea of what your kitchen could be like. (the window and door sizes and placements are guessed) I have used a cashmere coloured laminate door with a grey textured look laminate worktop and added a splash of colour with the blue glass behind the hob. In a small space a walk through corridor like the one you have next to the kitchen is a bit of a waste of space. it would have been better to put the kitchen at the far end with a dining table at the window seat. this way the living area would feel bigger.
