Facade improvement ideas for 1955 Adelaide Double Brick
The exterior of our house has bugged me for years. Prev owners rendered and put in sliding aluminium windows and totally ruined any character.We are looking at ways to improve street appeal. And make me love our house exterior. Our interior is renovated and great.Contemplating painting colorbond Gully and painting windows white. Shutters. Paint gutters? Or go all out and clad the exterior? I'm stuck!Ideas?

Comments (186)Fiona - I’ve been looking into replacing some doors with Crittal style and have contacted loads of suppliers and companies. The one that I’ve been most impressed with is the company mentioned above by Lou Valdini - Merlin Windows in Yorkshire. (I’m in the East Midlands). They gave me a competitive quote really quickly and then I got a quote from the fitter mentioned. (They fit across the UK and they link in with Merlin to ensure timings etc). Comments (19)Not sure how it works in the UK but in France if you are changing the appearance of your house that is visible from the road, you need prior permission. This is to avoid people doing things that are completely out of keeping with the neighbourhood, whether rendering, paintwork, or windows. Here you would probably have to go with cream rendering and retain the tiling, in which case choose a colour for the front door that picks up or contrasts with the brick/rust colour. My own first priority for the outside would be to deal with the garden, which you are very lucky to have, to get things in before the winter. One idea would be to get rid of the tiny patch of grass and lay thick gravel (not attractive to cats) plus a retaining path, create a simple structure to hide your dustbins (and bikes?), and invest in a couple of huge pots with some permanent planting and spring bulbs....See MoreExterior make over - window and render colour advice
Comments (22)Changes of fenestration such as changing the shape of the arched window will require planning approval so you should probably decide on everything you intend to do and then make an application. Designers, Architects and architectural technicians can all help here- I would expect them to be showing you in CAD how the house could look. How far you go depends on the available budget. In my opinion the house could benefit from swapping the current leaded light windows for something simpler. Your current windows are not very deep and and the fan lights exaggerate that so perhaps replacements without might be better....and these could look great in all the colours you suggested- personally I just like to see a contrast with the brick so would rather see a light colour choice with this brick. I would probably choose sage green. In my opinion the front door looks undersized next to the big arched window but painting the door and side panel the same colour will make it look bigger. Also I wonder if you are thinking about changing the arched window because it is sitting uncomfortably next to the window next door..... perhaps it is the window above the door that is wrong...... in fact if that is a bathroom and you could get away with a skylight instead I think I would rather leave the arched window and block up the one above the door. However for me the 1950s proportions of the windows slightly let down this house and the suggested full height windows of the garage conversion seem out of place too. If you have the money for a full facelift I would be looking for your CAD expert to show you how the house could look with different shaped window apertures- for instance the two windows to the left of the front door in my opinion would have more presence if they were deeper and fanlights would also work better then. The window above the front door seems too wide and too close to the corner and should relate more to the window next to it that is currently arched- perhaps get rid of this door above the front door or perhaps make it narrower. In my opinion continuing the garage roof towards the front door and building forward the ground floor window to the right of the front door would unify the garage extension with the main house and make it easier to choose a window style for the garage conversion as you would then likely choose three matching small windows. I might even consider making the window of the room over the garage a little narrower. However the room over the garage is a later addition and does illustrate that it is possible to match these bricks so using render to cover your changes may not be necessary and I agree that the brick and the climbing plants help make this a pretty and traditional looking house and unsympathetic changes could ruin that feel....See MoreHow to update the front of my house
Comments (8)For me the issue is that you are attached to neighbours and these houses are designed to be different but have a cohesive thread. When you change the color palate this run of houses no longer sits as comfortably together. Perhaps the Coronation Street house I posted had a story line before your time but Vera Duckworth lived there, had what she wanted and blow the neighbours and of course it adversely affected the look of that street and remains like that many years later. In fact a few years ago Sarah Beaney did a programme called Streets Ahead where they brought together whole streets by undoing peoples “improvements” to unify the look and add value. This programs demonstrated the need to respect your streetscape when spending money on your attached house. Looks like the original house might have looked like this one. Blonde brick, chunky timber windows, flat roof front verandah.
Cute timber house there Minnie. Those are usually earlier era houses, with higher ceilings. Space for the bullnose verandah out front. This one could be cladded but I personally wouldn't bother.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoOur home is white with grey windows and trim, dark grey roof tiles (and soon a black front door). But I bet it could work with grey walls and white trim too. (Dutch weather is often gloomy though.)

5 years agothanks everyone for taking the time to comment. I think you've helped clarify for me that a major overhaul isn't necessary but some superficial updates would be ok.
for more context, these are some (terrible) pics of our rear deck extension you can see we have used colorbond Dune to paint the render. i am hoping to get the shutter re sprayed maybe a white colour.
hence why I was thinking Dune render all around and respraying existing white windows out front OR replacing with chunkier wioden sash windows....
