Bathroom Layout

Planning a refit of the bathroom. Before I dive in with what seems to be the obvious layout I find myself wondering whether the people on Houzz could come up with any alternatives.

So, given a bathroom with this size and layout (door and airing cupboard are not moving) what are the options for laying it all out? This would be for a bath, basin and toilet.

For me I think you have 2 options one would be to put a 1700 bath in the gap under the window and if you want a shower end run the pipework in the airing cupboard, this may require adjustment to the soil pipe for the WC which could go on either the left hand wall or the door wall along with the basin in a built in unit to keep it all hidden and tucked away. Or if the pipework needs to stay external then I would suggest the bath to the left wall and the WC on the exterior wall opposite the basin next to the bath

What's the current layout? And do you really really need/want a bath?

Both Hansgrohe and (Friedrich) Grohe are German companies; Friedrich was a son of Hans who went on his own in the 1930s, so they share a certain heritage. These days, Grohe is larger and no longer family owned. Both produce outside Germany as well as on their original German sites still. Both produce "basic" and "high-end" ranges. They're both regarded well back home in Germany, much of the choice is down to personal preference. Hansgrohe is on average slightly more expensive (but not on everything). They also own the Axor design brand which has a more "ecletic" selection. One can mix-and-match; in our bath (bit messy, sorry - we're using it for the washing up while waiting for the kitchen to be installed), the mixer is Grohe as is the shower wall outlet, the shower rail and head shower arm (just above the shower screen) are Hansgrohe pieces. At least the chromed finishes are very close for the two: Both can be sourced well below retail list prices - if you're prepared to wait, German online sellers for bathroom goods tend to have many-months delivery timelines. For Grohe essentials (the classical Grotherm mixers) at least, any German DIY shop stocks these at very attractive prices (the difference to the UK retail price list will pay for the ferry ticket and fuel).

It will take your builder no time to pull down a brick wall. If it’s the one between the bedroom and the landing I think your builder will assure you it’s no bigger deal than taking out a wall made from wood studs. Just because it’s built of brick doesn’t mean it’s holding anything up. Building stud wall is a builders bread and butter and since your old brick wall would have likely needed skimming the cost won’t be much different so don’t be afraid to go further because you only want this level of dust and disruption once.

Hi Jayne, We have just last week helped someone who was also struggling with the layout in their bathroom. We had a video call with her to discuss the possible layouts and bounce around ideas. This was all done during our Power Hour. We do not design bathrooms but we can suggest an overall concept and look at things like tiles and decorative accessories. Following all your kind thoughts on my redesign, we’ve decided we very much like @Jonathan’s design for the bathroom and the removal of the original wardrobes on that side to give us more space. However in the bedroom we’re going to leave the bed where it is and instead wrap some more wardrobes around the bit leading to the dormer window. I’ve measured up and this will give us another 2.4m of wardrobe space. But anyway, my next question is whether anyone here is a bathroom or design professional who could do us a detailed drawing of the replanned bathroom with enough detail for a builder/plumber to work with? Happy to pay for such drawings. It will take us a while to book a plumber/fitter so I’m hoping to get a precise drawing with accurate measurements, then source ahead as many of the materials as I can by myself.

Thank you both for your comments. Yes, a bath is required. There will be a walk in shower in the en-suite. It would be nice to have one in the bathroom as well but there is not the space and a bath is more important – so it will have to be shower over the bath. I have never figured out how you do things like bathe the kids in a bathroom with no bath.

The bath by the window is the obvious place – it will fit snugly but that means more complicated waste for the toilet on the other wall. The bath on the adjacent wall would mean that we could consider a standalone bath but since it would require a shower as well I have not found a suitable solution for a shower screen – only wrap around curtains.

I had rejected a boxed in bath on the adjacent wall but looking at the plan (thanks rinq) and with the extended shelf with hanging toilet the idea is growing on me. Certainly one for further investigation.

Really like the wall hung toilet, extra wide sill and the bath niche. Here's a similar one that we put in at my sons house, looks great ( don't have a finished pic, you can imagine the toilet. )
