Help with 60’s style exterior
We are looking to extend our house but at the same time I want to update the exterior to modernise it a bit. It’s an odd shaped house... what would you reccomend? I’d like to render it but Im not sure if the budget would stretch to that. We have brown windows too which would need replacing when we do the extension. What colour cladding would suit the yellow brick If we don’t render it? i wondered about replacing the cladding but bringing it all the way down?

Comments (11)Hi Caro, I have attached two images of wall paper that I think you compliment your kitchen. The green and blues in these wallpapers would harmonise with the existing titles and highlight the height of the room. From your ideas book it seems you like repeat patterns, both of these styles suggest a 60s feel whilst remaining contemporary. As you can see in the second photograph, the pattern and colours sit very well with the dark shiny worktop, similar to the one you mention putting in at a later date. Comments (2)I had condensation problems in my old rental flat. The bathroom was windowless and the kitchen had no extraction. We could control the bathroom by over-running the extractor fan long after a shower and would have the windows cracked open on 'vent' setting when drying clothes. Have you considered installing a Mechanical Heat Recovery System? You can get single room units that vent directly to an external wall (similar to an extractor fan. You could install single room units in more humid rooms - bathroom, kitchen. Avoid hang drying wet clothes in the house. Invest in a washer/dryer or I've heard running a dehumidifier next to drying clothes makes them dry really fast....See MoreEmily O'Byrne

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoCedar cladding will become a nice and silvery when left bare or adds warmth when stained. Or use rendering that goes with the color. Pale tans, offwhite and charcoal go great with the limestone. (And your brick does need some thorough cleaning)

I had in mind either:
1st pic - this colour cladding but with the brickwork rendered and white windows.
Or
2nd pic - this kind of cladding with rendered brickwork and grey windows. But I like the wood colour and I’m not sure I’d be as keen if it went silvery?
All other houses on our road look like ours but white windows and so far nobody has done anything drastic so I’m worried about it standing out too much! But I also think if we do it we might regret not going for it!

Then you go with modern cedar/and/or charcoal combination.

I like your brick color. It would be definitively lighter after cleaning. I do not know what people use for exterior cleaning in your country. Here we use pressure washing, white washing. - PRO

5 years agoThank you so much that’s great!!! I will show my husband tonight. Yeah you might be right about not rendering. The other houses are all either this colour brick or a brown/red brick but the same style so I was worried about it standing out too much.
Unfortunately the brick wouldn’t go that light though. Even when cleaned it’s very yellow with black flecks in it. I’ll try and attach a picture of the internal brick before we painted it.
The conservatory will go as it’s leaking and quite old and I’d rather have some smart bifold doors leading onto a patio. It’s also brown so wouldn’t match the new glazing as we would either go with white grey or black.
