Is painted wood kitchen units realistic for a messy busy family?

We are renovating including new kitchen in summer. From the very beginning I have had in my head that I am having painted wood kitchen units.

It was only last night as my in laws left after dinner when I went round my current high gloss units with a damp cloth and bottle of dettol surface cleaner scrubbing all unit doors, which I do once a week...... can I do this with painted wood units? If not, how do you clean them? Should I rethink my unit plans?

I use a damp cloth to clean ours without any problems.

Agree with LTS. A damp cloth, grease free of course, should be sufficient.

A painted kitchen painted well will take a great deal of wear. Bear in mind that the high street typically spray paints and only a couple of coats which not enough. Really you need two under coats, cut back in between applications and then two or three top coats, cut back in between. You also need to ensure that the final coat is applied on site once the kitchen is fitted and caulked. It should look like cast sugar when it's finished, and done properly it cannot be beaten. We add gesso into our top coats too to thicken it up. Your other option is spray pigmented lacquer but it doesn't look good on classical mouldings, cockbeads etc. Poorly painted and prepared coats will chip more easily, and all painted surfaces will chip, in the same way that doors and architraves do.

Brilliant things to consider Minnie thank you. Only 4 of us in the house, and we do have a seperate dining room. I only want casual bar stool seating for the kitchen but am struggling with where else to place 4 bar stool. Haven't got the width of room to have them all down the side of island facing the wall of units, plus I really like the sleek look of an island and didn't want to interupt that streamlined look by having seating around one end in an L shape. Can't thing of any other option unless someone can thing of something to consider I'd be very grateful. I had my heart set on a mirror splash back but got put off as people said I would have water marks on it all the time from the sink.....is that everyone's experience of a mirror splashback or might I have made a hasty judgement? I was thinking of a washed light grey oak type flooring or a warm oak flooring but was worried if I went for oak ( this would be my colour preference) that it wouldn't work as I will have nothing else oak in the room. It's a south facing room, sun all day and evening so was thinking of a off white light grey tone on the walls and lots of chrome......again struggling to know how to incorporate that and what to put with it colour/ accent/ decor wise to make it feel comfy and not clinical. I'd love dark coloured glass slider but all windows in house are white so I had discounted it. Hi there, When it comes to engineered wooden floors they have been designed to work in conjunction with under floor heating so there is no issue there. If you are looking to go for a wooden floor then we would recommend going for an engineered board with a brushed and lacquered finish. The brushed texture will hide and scratches or scuffs that may occur, the lacquer on the board. Generally our boards come with 8 coats of Super Matte Lacquer. The lacquer will help protect the board from any spillages seeping into the board. To my mind, High gloss = High maintenance.

We've always had painted wood doors and never had any problems, If they do get grubby a quick wipe over with a damp cloth and some Method surface cleaner and Bob's your uncle.

I'd say they're certainly more forgiving when it comes to fingerprints and marks, than high gloss doors.

I think your current flat door is easier to clean than a panel door.
Separately the way the door is finished does make a difference- a gloss door can be manufactured by wrapping with a laminate finish or is can have multiple layers of lacquer applied. The laminate finish is perhaps harder wearing and the lacquer/ painted finish can get chipped.
So if you want a traditional kitchen (and I understand the desire to have a change) you might prefer to have a cheaper more resilient door. If you prefer a traditional painted finish you can have a painted wood grain door or one that is completely smooth- in my opinion the wood grain door is more forgiving of touch up should you chip the paint.
Colour also seems to play a part in resilience. I have a painted wood grain kitchen in a pale grey/anthracite combination- the pale doors don’t seem to show any damage but chips are visible on the dark doors. The good news is that a tiny amount of paint applied to a chip with an artists paint brush is all that is needed for repair.

I have 3 small kids and my kitchen units are painted in eggshell (a refurb job) they are easy enough to wipe down. I did just do a full clean the other week 2 years after they were painted. Beware - dust sits on the grooves, and they do chip if kids are bashing stuff into them. Although I feel mine have held up well in a very light grey. My ideal would be a handleless matt kitchen.
