Please help - new windows too small / how to make windows appear large
Comments (14)I love shutters but I think they would totally change the look of your house which looks great btw.If you're going to have mouldings and drop the window box a little lower I would think about artificial plants. I'm just thinking plants will need a fair bit of upkeep and unless you go up a ladder it could be dangerous! I know people may well disagree on that but I'm just thinking about leaning out of a window! I've had a quick look and you may struggle to find mouldings (seem to be called pediments?!) which would blend with the house. If so, just go for a deeper window box but hopefully you'll have more luck than me!...See MoreWhat would you do too make this front garden more attractive
Comments (9)The red robin's have gotten a little big and now block the windows. Does anything else flower wise come up at other times of year? It's only looking straggly due to the daff and tulip stalks, they'll need chopping off soon, and you would presume something else would come up to take it's place. It's difficult to have a perennial garden in a small space as you can't pack enough plants that come up at different times of year, however, it's not impossible. You could have a change and go for slabs and pots, easier to maintain, but don't forget that they'll need water every day in the summer. Do you like gardening? If you do, stay with perennials but plant with different level plants to give interest, and make sure you've got something there righ throught the growing season, plus some evergreen's for winter. If you don't like gardening, go for the pots. Acers, Hydrangeas and Hostas all do well in pots, but get big pots or barrells....See MoreFront garden planters, plants and hedging
Comments (23)I think Photinia would get too large and unruly for planters on top of the walls. They need managing otherwise they get very large and have a very loose form. Personally I'd opt for something that is more consistent in form and shape without too much upkeep and provides an attractive green backdrop to your beautiful house rather than competing with it for attention! Something like Buxus or Japanese box (Euonymus Green Rocket) as alternative to avoid issues with Box blight. Alternatively Privet is a good reliable evergreen hedger particular well suited to urban situations as they tolerate pollution. Either way its worth adding some water retaining granules and slow release fertiliser to the soils to give them a boost. At least you're planting at a good time to avoid stressing them in the dry summer months. Good luck!...See MoreCan anything be done to improve the front of my house?
Comments (10)Oh thank you so much everyone for your ideas! I'm looking at it so differently now. I believe the house is an interwar ex local authority semi, but I googled some pictures as suggested and it does look older? Thank you ring, sarh123 Jonathan and Beano for your advice about the windows. Looking at it now, I think they are the reason I don't like the look of the house, particularly the downstairs window. Unfortunately sarh123, your lovely pictures have sold me on the multipane look which I probably can't afford right now! I will get a quote though just in case. Love the ideas for colours for the garage etc. Forzaitalia, do you have a particular paint colour in mind that would give the green/grey look like in the picture? The blue/black looks really good too though. Would it still look ok with the windows left white colourhappy? I'm looking forward to cutting back those trees too! The pictures of the planters are gorgeous and will definitely take on board what you have all said. I don't think I can remove the tree by the garage as it is not on my land though. The front door is old and not very secure so I don't know what to do with it yet. I agree, emanuelle that the window to the side doesn't look very good and the stone cladding on the bottom will probably look terrible when i have cut the trees back. I will have to see how the budget goes for that though as there is a lot to do inside - it is a bit of a mess in there... but at least it is mine:) It's amazing what a few pairs of fresh eyes can do so thank you very much!!!...See MoreEllie
