painting laminate floors

Has anyone had success in painting modern laminate flooring? We have pergo sensation modern plank through our hall and living room/kitchen - high traffic areas where things get dropped. Their website says you can’t paint it but is that true or a ploy to get us to pull it up and start again? Apparently old style laminate is easier to paint and this stuff is not.

We've never tried what you're considering Charlotte, but us flooring gurus think it extremely unlikely to work.

Let's say you find a primer that helps paint key to the laminate, allowing it to also dry, we just can't see the paint adhering enough. We reckon paint will scratch off very easily. Laminates have a kind of have a protective wear layer which will make it almost impossible to paint.

Think in reverse. If you had a laminate down and you spilled paint over it, you'd hope and expect the paint to easily wipe off. Laminates are engineered to prevent what you are aiming to do from being able to happen.

Not a ploy from the laminate manufacturer. An engineered fact, we'd say. You dig?

I don’t rate floor paint at all, personally. I painted my wooden floorboards in the bedroom, and then added two coats of “diamond hard” (yeh right!). It wasn’t long before it started to chip and looked a right mess. I doubt painting laminate would fare any better, I’m afraid.

I'm decorating my flat and cannot decide on which laminate flooring colour to go with. The bedroom is painted mauve (see photo), and has a dark brown bed, so I'm very much tempted with the oak flooring. However, I'm worried that all the grey will look depressing across the remaining flat. Especially since I'm planning on painting the remaining rooms light blue/grey tones. Similarly, I'm worried that the walnut looks old-fashioned and also clashes with the bedframe. Which would you go for?

If you are keeping the skirting consider painting it the same colour as the floor to trick your eye into thinking the floor area is bigger.

Love the link Mrsmcee posted. That marble effect looks gorgeous - it reminded me that I bought a 90cm wide roll to make sure I didn't have to worry about extra seams lining up though. Its a bit more expensive but vs the cost of new worktops I felt it was worth it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00A6OFLYK?ref_=pe_1365641_54848841 Also found the specific type of plastic paddle thingy I used - this time referred to as a 'smoother' lol. I would probably avoid the dark marble type finishes since if you do scratch the surface the product has a white 'base' under the printed pattern which is what tends to show through on the scratch. This isn't very noticeable on the butcher-block and probably barely noticeable on white marble but I think it would be much more obvious with a dark pattern. I actually used a much cheaper sticky back vinyl to cover all the cupboards doors in a basic white. You can just about tell in the before photo I posted that they were a pale duck-egg blue which wasn't so bad but the laminate was unfortunately cracking in places. The vinyl has held everything together and made for an easy clean surface rather than painting which would have let the laminate deteriorate further. It comes in lots more colours and 10m lengths making it better value for money but was also thinner and trickier to work with. Pretty much anything but Chalk Paint.............dreadful stuff, which shouldn't be used for any application at all...............I can't say enough bad things about it, and I doubt I could say anything good. My wife was a furniture restorer and painter for many, many years, I can't tell you how many pieces she had to rescue for people when Chalk paint first came out. Anyhow, rant over...............not your fault. So, to make it easy on yourself.................sand as much chalk paint off as you can and then wash . Apply a coat of Zinsser 1-2-- ( Blue, tin - water based - not red ) - this one :- Zinsser @ Toolstation Depending on how bad your surface was before painting, you may require two coats, try and get an even base. Then, as it's water based, you can now use any water based paint over the top. I would suggest for furniture that you use a good Satinwood - Valspar at B&Q is and excellent paint, you can have it colour matched to anything if you want. Dulux as always is also super, but can require a degree of expertise to get it to work well, It's a fussy paint, that likes a perfect working temperature. However, it dries great and is very durable.

Flooring megastore is absolutely right. Modern laminate floors are designed to be waterproof and crucially stain-proof.

This is what a standard laminate floor looks like in section

the wear layer/overlay is designed to be really durable and non porous. It would be very difficult for any varnish to grip onto the overlay.

Your Pergo floor should be very durable but if it didn't meet your reasonable expectations you may want to talk to your suppliers.

At the end of the day Pergo website stated:

Wood is a material that will inevitably show signs of wear. Sensation floors keep their looks year after year.
