Calacatta Oro slabs vein matched (veins flow) but not book matched (veins mirror) to a shower enclosure and over a bath fitted today.

In the right setting, a one-off feature item in a gold colour, such as a marble fireplace looks stunning! Or for a more subtle look, why not have a bespoke made table top or vanity top in a pale marble with gold coloured veining such as the Calacatta Oro? Let us know what you think! Helen

It sounds like the marble you like is calacatta rather than Carrara marble. Does the marble have dramatic grey veining through it? Lagoon would be more representative of Carrara marble. I think if you were dead set on the marble for the splashback and it is a big enough piece to create a dramatic focal point I'd be tempted to consider a plain white or light grey silestone for the worktop (depending on the paint colour you have chosen for the cabinets). Dekkon does a calacatta lookalike but it looks very fake to me. Maybe someone on here has experience of marble worktops which could alleviate your fears although I have to agree they don't seem to be very practical.

For quartz cheaper than Silestone & Caesarstone, you have to be careful that you are getting good quality. Some alternatives aren't good. And by good quality, I mean good quality quartz, good quality machining, templating, flexibility at installation (e.g. some machining on site can be helpful to ensure tidy up stands, edges) etc. I went through finding an alternative earlier this year. My research led me to two companies. One was Rock & Co which offers a product called Urban Quartz in a large range of colours. They have a showroom in Hertfordshire, near St Albans. There was also another company called Cambridge Worktops which is linked to Stoneworld in Kendal, which offered a quartz product called Cliveden Quartz. . There were minor differences between what they were offering in terms of the quartz products and their processing, and logistics -- and each company wanted me to believe that their approach was great and the other's approach was inappropriate. But after a lot of questioning I had the feeling that I was willing to deal with either company. And in both cases their prices involved a significant saving. In the end I contracted with Rock & Co because they had the shade of off white that I liked best. They exceeded my expectations in some respects; met expectations in many respects, and fell short just in some. So I can't say the process was issue free, but I can same that I am overall happy, and that our quartz countertop is now installed and it looks amazing.

You should really see cabinet colour and countertop colours together in the space where the kitchen is going, if possible, to see whether it works or not. And keep the door sample vertical and the countertop sample horizontal, since that is how you will see it. You wouldn’t believe how much the difference in light in the showroom and in your home will affect the colours. You could go for the veined marble(look) on the island and a different countertop on the other cabinets if it doesn’t work with the colour of those.
