Does this ladder lead to living space or simply the attic?

We are building a small home that has only minimal attic space and no "hidden" place to put the attic access. I really hate to see the framed in access just sitting there on the ceiling of a main room. Was this a solution for that problem?

Hello!

This ladder actually leads to the husband's office and is stationary. You could do something like this for your attic if you were ok with always having a ladder exposed in the room.

Hello Rebecca. Congrats on the house! I think aubergine would work nicely with the kitchen timber. I'd look for some wallpaper to put on the lounge wall where they have hung their artwork. I'm thinking maybe a grey/beige background with a aubergine pattern. I'd choose a charcoal sofa (to match worktop) and add your aubergine again in cushions & throws and possibly a lighter charcoal rug. Make this area your 'cosy' space. At the other end of the room I would get a Large mirror for the wall and paint the frame in aubergine to match the paper and bring the colour down the room whilst also reflecting light. The kitchen is quite dark for such a small space so I'd just accessorise with a utensil holder, a handtowel and a couple of vases all in aubergine. I'd also keep as little as possible on the worktop! For your table, i'd buy a long glass console table and put it under the window opposite the kitchen to keep the space clear and un cluttered. The bathroom I'd accessorise with yellow! Grey and yellow are gorgoeus together! Look out for a yellow handsoap and buy a yellow bathmat. a tall modern yellow vase for the window sill and either some artwork for the walls or a mirror. That leaves orange for the bedroom!!! I'd start by finding a material or wallpaper with an amazing pattern that I love that has orange in it and then accessorise the rest of the room around the feature. Good Luck and ENJOY!

Thanks all for your input. I will take some more pictures on Sunday once we have had a move around. Ash, thanks for your input and reply. The fireplace is a little unusual in that the picture you see with the lantern is the section next to the actual fire, but is part of the surround, i think there is one on the other side too - your comments are all taken on board and we will act upon them this weekend - particularly the rug ones. Hi Minnie, like AJ Interiors I have read through some of your other posts so thanks for replying to this one, all noted, like the coffee table under the light idea. Seniordiva- also thanks very much for your comments, you are spot on. They are definately getting wooden floor just a case of when. Im going to go through this whole page with them on Sunday and then get cracking. Pictures to come soon.....

Hiya Jill, thanks for sending those images over. In response to your first question about your bedroom, I can think of a couple of solutions that may work. The first is the same solution as my previous French window answer to @montbray and fit something that moves with the window, either a Pleated or a Venetian which operate under tension and open with a thumb tab rather than a cord. Alternatively, it would look quite nice if a blind, particularly a Roman blind was fitted right to the top of the wall above the window, at the ceiling. This will allow the blind to be ‘dressed’ to form a valance effect above the window when the blind is open, giving full view from, and use of the window and when it is closed, it will give the illusion of the window being taller. In the case of your bathroom blind, you might like to try a waterproof Roller blind made from PVC fabric. Alternatively, Faux wood blinds are a really great idea, as they have all the look of traditional Wooden blinds, but won't warp in wet or steamy conditions. Admittedly, it is a difficult window to dress and there are not a lot of options, but hopefully, these will give you some ideas. Sarah

The house has been extended over the years at ground floor level in a haphazard manner and has lost its original simple but workable layout. There are two load bearing walls running from the north-east side of the house to the south-west side and it appears that these carry the first floor joists. To create an open plan type of arrangement will entail demolishing these walls and inserting large and expensive RSJ’s and major construction work. The house will need to be vacated for a substantial period, probably in the order of 12 months. I suggest that a more practical solution would be to simply add on to the existing structure and just tweak areas of the existing ground floor. In this way the work can be undertaken without vacating the house and the resulting layout can produce the open feeling the occupants are looking for. A plan showing one such solution is attached although there are several similar variations. Both add-on’s (the sitting area and the new kitchen) could have a variety of roof types but a flat roof would be preferable I suspect. It will also be much easier to forecast the likely cost of the project by extending with new build rather than trying to shoe-horn what is required into an existing area. Several 1930’s houses have been successfully altered and brought up to date in this manner.
