Paint runner - why so patchy?

Hi. I've been trying to use my new paint runner but the paint isn't coming through the roller. I followed instructions and tried it repeatedly for about 20 mins but it was patchy. And the roller pops out of its holder if you press too hard (ir was not that hard actually). It's on new plaster by the way (7 weeks old so ready to paint). Any advice?

When you say paint runner do you mean like the one in the picture? If so then I personally think they’re not great especially on bare plaster. Get an ordinary paint roller and tray, the roller sleeve needs to be a good quality medium fluffy pile and get a good quality synthetic brush for cutting in. Unsure what paint you’re using but you need a watered down base coat on bare plaster 50/50 water/paint or bare plaster paint to save the hassle of mixing.

Yes, that's the one. It's not the best. I got it working in the end but the tool itself is pretty flimsy and the plastic holder scratches the wall if you press a little to hard.
I'm using thin coats of white emulsion, didn't realise I had to water down the paint. I'll try that on second and third coats. Thanks

It's a really lovely hall. Loving Carolina's suggestions. Also, do the doors have a threshold that you could temporarily remove and look under (then put back) to see the floor underneath (if you see what I mean)? That way you could find out fairly quickly if you had tiles or wood. @ E D - unfortunately they may do a good product but a web site that comes across as a dodgy spam site doesn't make anyone want to find out. :(

I’d paint it - maybe 2 tone as some of the comments suggest. I did mine this summer, absolutely love how stylish it looks. I used chalk paint which needed no undercoat (some mahogany coloured stain previously) - although the grey took better than the white. Your stair gate suggest kids, I have 3 small ones and a few chips have appeared on mine, but overall I’m pleased with it. It gets a lot of comments when people come over. (We also need new carpet but holding off until the youngest gets potty trained)

I’ve touched on this subject before but want to present it to you again: Do you think painting these doors, of bathroom and separate toilet, in F&B’s Off Black would work? Also, would I need to paint the insides of the doors too?

There is however no doubt that the individuals sent the first time did not have the skill level to carry out the work, the finish is poor and the original firm need to source better workers to complete your job. However the sympathy of earlier posters and claims they wouldn’t have them back won’t resolve your issues. You need to put your complaints in writing and state what you expect to be done to resolve the issue and a timescale. Don’t forget to send the letter by recorded delivery to prove they received it. In my opinion the complaint should concentrate on the poor tiling and the absence of preparation before decorating rather than the cost of the work which you agreed to at the outset. The CAB are right that you have no legal redress unless you give this company opportunity to resolve the issues first and in fairness by agreeing a fixed fee for work you are likely contractually entitled to call them back for remedial works. You are also right to withhold payment but after their next visit need to be realistic about the expected result- you will no doubt be looking for faults but the expected results should be competent/tidy/smart looking as perfection is unachievable.

Make sure you do at least two mist coats with watered down paint (50/50). New plaster will suck up the paint so it will be difficult to spread the paint evenly. Change the roller you are using and don't press too hard. Sometimes a large paintbrush is more effective - although harder work!
