Home office/ front room in desperate need of a spruce up

We have recently moved in so please excuse the mess.

I currently work from home and the front room has became an office space which will eventually revert to a dining room when I am back at work. Our house is very small hence the fridge being in here.

I'm looking for help and inspiration of what we can do with this space. It might be hard to remove the fridge freezer, so I was thinking maybe a accent or feature wall to go with the magnolia.

I've had to guess the sizes of the walls:- I think if you move the Fridge out of the Alcove and put it behind the door, it frees up one wall just for office use.

Both Alcoves can have storage cabinets in with doors to tidy away clutter.

Put the desk in front of the Chimney Stack, with a nice clock, nothing too distracting.

We would recommend looking at some modular shelving systems or ours as it's made to measure and can work well in small spaces, but most of these combine shelves, desks and storage cabinets so you can just select what you need from the all the parts. You can also move their location at a later date into a new room or even if you are ever moving home again. We hope that's useful, ON&ON Planning team

Hi. Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... This is a handsome house. First...symmetry. Can you make the front pillars the same height. I would lower the LH one to match RH. A strong iron railing along the LH side and in the small front piece LH. Keep front door a strong colour....dark green/blue, navy, whatever, and paint the iron railigs the same colout. Avoid lots of small pots...messy and lots to water. You could i) have a narrow raised bed along the RH wall between you and the next property planted with a mix of small evergreen shrubs and trailing plants..small Choysia Ternata, etc., There is a trailing euphorbia (Amagloides ?) which is sculptural but relaxed. ii) Acquire or have built two or three large tree pots. When they are empty, position them in various places, with bamboo canes, to see where they would work best, and how many you want. I would suggest something deciduous with autumn colour and blossom, like a prunus autumnalis; a crab apple; a quince on dwarf stock; a columnar flowering cherry,Prunus Amanogawa....the choice is huge. Avoid cottagey annuals and too much patchy, mixed planting. I would keep pots square, in harmony with the raised bed. This house is formal and urban. Keeo it elegant and with strong lines broken by the foliage and trailers. I needs beauty, not prettiness. cheers

Hello! This room is really small and since you use it for storage/office I would not advise you to go too brave with colours as they might make the room look and feel smaller. I know it might sound dull but I@d advise you to use white all over and either have mirrored doors covering the shelves you have there or a mirrored wall right in front of the desk, that will definitely make the room look bigger. Also, use plants because they add freshness as well as colour to the room and they're very relaxing. Most people don't realise that color can be added in many different ways not only on walls...sometimes the details can't be more striking such as a white room with a mirrored wall and a really striking office chair - orange, green, etc - plants, flowers, artwork, all can used to make a room colourful. You can also buy colorful boxes and put all your dvds, cds, books in them which will make the room look tidy and neater and add style and color. See some examples below: Hope that helps! I think your plan is good. I assume your home is a Victorian or 30s terrace as they do tend to be long and skinny, with a middle room that used to be used as a dining room in the old days. I think swopping the table to the end extension room and creating a cosy sitting room at the front of the house where the walls are red would flow better. Then you can have your office space in the middle. If the budget allows, I think knocking the wall between the kitchen and the office/dining area would widen out the room and make it less corridor like. Just a thought. I would also paint the walls throughout in one colour. Something brighter and cheerful such as an off white or pale green. The room will look bigger in a paler colour. I also think a rectangular table, if budget allows, can take up less room than a circular one and give better flow. Last weeks George Clark’s programme (C4) featured a very similar house to yours with the three rooms in a row, so may be worth catching up on to give you ideas. Here’s a few pics to inspire. 😊
