Painting just the picture rail?

Hello! Has anyone gone for painting the walls in a room white and only applying a colour to the picture rail? I’m struggling to find any photos online and would like an idea of how this would look.. any colours from light, dark, grey, colourful, etc.

Yes, inclined to agree with Ribena. Particularly when done messily.

Brings back my student days... :-)

On the other hand when neatly done (and in conjunction with other woodwork) it may well be a good look. I’ll see if I can find some pics.

Hello mcmonkeymcbean, That is rather nice fabric actually... If you choose a really light stone colour for walls or be bold and add an ochre on the window wall (it blends the curtains in and is another way of dealing with bright fabrics.. and whitening for the ceiling and above the picture rail.. I think it could work beautifully. Or alternatively keep the walls lighter with stone colours as I mentioned first. and have the curtains and golds as accent colours... It entirely depends on what you want to create... Serene and opulent or dramatic and extravagant! For woodwork have a think about something that pics out the gold... Also a brassy or gold mirror would accent the curtains and the lamps... With regards to your furniture... painting them could be an option and charcoals are lovely with golds and the cream. Duck egg blue is also nice as minnie said for wall with gold elements and if you like that don't paint the furniture.. If you want to consider the furniture then, really chalky matt charcoal for example could make the furniture quite a focus and give the room the added dramatic feel it needs to bring the look together, so it isn't bleurgh... Love that word! : ))

Just so you know, these parts are made on a tool called s spindle;e (small scale manufacturing). if you really really want to get the shape "just so" the supplier will be able to have a profile made for you, a new profile blade for a spindle machine will cost between £200 and £300. They may also have a minimum order OR they might ask you to pay a modest amount towards "set up time" (changing the blade over, etc.) I use Ternex in Welwyn for this sort of thing, their existing profiles can be seen here...https://www.flickr.com/photos/exploitspace/albums/72157669236158295

Painting dado rails for two tone effect

Hi woodster1987, Traditional paint brands have paints for walls & ceilings as well as wood & metal. Paints for walls & ceilings are available in matt finish and sheen finish. Matt finish, depending on brand and range, could be non-wipeable, wipeable and washable. Those reflect little light, upto 8%. Sheen finishes (Soft Sheen, Silk, Eggshell) are best for kitchens and bathrooms as well as stairwells and hallways and light reflection upto 30%. Those are durable and washable finishes. Paints for wood & metal are "made for purpose", and come in Satin, Eggshell and Gloss durable finishes with a higher sheen. The least shiny is Satin, the most Gloss and High Gloss. Last decade those were mostly oil based, but today most are water based and low odour. There are some paint brands that provide matt finish for walls and wood, but those shouldn't really be used in kitchens and bathrooms and high traffic areas. Please note, whatever finish you choose, no matter what paint brand you use, the old woodwork must be sanded to add "key" - and undercoated before applying finish coats. Are you London based? Dark Staircase with Dado Rail and Picture Rail

We are going to decorate our hall, stairs and landing which is quite dark with not a great deal of natural light. The HSL have a dado rail and a picture rail which give us 5 things to consider painting 1 ) the woodwork i.e. doorframes, skirting, dado and picture rails [the doors are pine] 2) Below the dado 3) Between dado and picture rail 4) Above picture rail 5) the ceiling The woodwork needs to be white, so my question is, what do you consider the best way of doing the wall and ceiling areas. Since it's a dark hallway, the colours have got to be on the lighter shades. Options are: 1) Darker colour under the dado, lighter shade between dado and picture rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling .... I'm not sure if this looks a bit dated and fussy these days with effectively three different colours on the wall. 2) Have the same colour above and below the dado rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling. 3) Have white under the dado rail, have a band of colour between dado and picture rail and then white above picture rail and ceiling 4) Same as 3, but having a very light off white under the dado and above picture rail and ceiling. Has anyone got any experience of having a dado and a picture rail and what did you decide to plump for? What is the modern way of looking at this? And the last question - I've been looking at some greys for this hallway, but I'm really not sure that my pine doors and grey paint make great bedfellows - again, opinions gratefully received. I could only find two images with a dark picture rail. I think they say it all.

It could work if the 'colour' was an off white or shaded white colour os similar. Slightly darker woodwork can work really well.
