Garden/outdoor light ornament query

Hello,

Can anyone tell me the name of the design/style of this garden/outdoor light ornament please? I saw this one whilst on holiday in Greece and would like a similar one for my new garden.

Hi. Hard to tell from the photos but it looks like it’s made from ceramic, most likely a studio pottery and handmade. The light fitting itself looks like a standard indoor one, you can tell because of the switch on the cable. For outdoor use you would need a different kind of fitting. Tried to find one similar with no joy. You could perhaps get one made on commission tho if you have any pottery studios near by. Looks fairly easy to do and an earthen ware glaze would look great on it.

Looks like a wonderful character garden that could really benefit from a more dynamic planting scheme to soften the evergreen backbone - lots of gardens of this vintage are dominated by large evergreen shrubs and trees which tend to make spaces feel claustrophobic and smaller than they are. The lawn should be maintained and enhanced with shapely borders packed with dynamic perennial plantings, edged in brick or steel to maintain the flow long into the future. I think I would want to dissect the existing stonework walls and steps with some more open simple terrace/patio areas that put you in the garden and take advantage of aspect whilst a timber pergola/structure would add interest and the opportunity for climbers. A really wonderful canvas that should be enhanced and developed rather than changed, maintaining the feel and character of the original garden.

You have worked hard and built the 'bones' of your garden but now it needs dressing. For me there aren't enough plants. I totally agree with the pyracantha/clematis idea at the bottom of the garden but I don't agree with more pots. Pots are actually quite labour intensive in the summer when they need watering regularly even if it rains. Hence I think shrubs/plants should be planted in the gravel which will still suppress the weeds and help retain moisture in the summer. I love the idea of planting only white flowers. They are visible longest in the twilight. Vita Sackville-West planted her famous white and silver garden in Sissinghurst Castle. I firmly believe that fences should be invisible and disappear. Lest the garden looks like it is in a box. They should not be painted a bright eye-catching colour but instead camouflaged with a drapery of ever changing foliage. Climbers can be trained to grow along the fences. Either on trellis the same colour as the fence, on wires or on each other as suggested before. You could even have a beautiful fan or espalier trained apple tree growing against whichever fence in the sunniest spot. If you can lose the fences your garden will appear larger because there will be no boundaries. Lastly as final touches Ithink the eye should be drawn to a feature in the bottom right-hand corner such as a statue or beautiful elegant tree such as a silver birch. Also you should consider garden lighting which will add another dimension and give you an outdoor living area in the summer. Up-lighting is particularly effective and white fairy lights add a lovely twinkle.

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

The aspect is very important for a thin section of a garden. Like Pat Oliver I too would ask whether or not you use the gravel section for parking a car and agree that you also need to think about how it joins the rest of the garden. I understand that you get the sun in this area late afternoon/early evening and is a "sun trap". If you want to add some shelter you could add a pergola along a section of the site and grow some evergreen climbers, scented roses, jasmine and clematis. You could then add some seating or a dining set under the pergola for a late night meal with friends. If you plan to keep the paving slabs then think about furniture and pots that are of a similar tone to tie the area together and then use some white ones as accents to tie the area again to the house. If you remove the slabs then a gravel garden is a great idea, but you could also use composite decking boards and raise the area so that you come out of the door at the same level, and then have some steps down to the rest of the garden. Also think about setting the garden at an angle across the site, as this helps from a design point of view and results in you getting more items in to the area. Draw the area on to a piece of paper and have fun with shapes. If it is such a sun trap think about sun loving plants that are suited to arid conditions, that is why a gravel garden is such a good idea. I hope this helps.
