I love green roofs, but make sure that you have them done properly. We offer an upgrade to a sedum roof on our Garden rooms. They look great and add another protective layer to the roof, whilst also offering oodles of benefits to the local eco system. I used to be quite skeptical as years ago, I ran a business with a green roof that had been built in the 1960's. We had no end of problems with leaks, damp and smells. Never mind having to get up there with the lawnmower... The new Sedum roofs are totally different and I am a complete convert. Just make sure that what you buy is a proper green roof and not try and grow grass on your roof :)

Hi Minnie I'm good thanks. Sounds like we need to form a George Clarke fan club! I've stalked him on Twitter for years :) Minnie was in John Lewis earlier and had a gander at the Little Greene colour chip board and have to say Silt looked fabulous with the Purple Brown you like, it's looks fairly dark compared to other colours you've mentioned (and maybe a wildcard offering) but might work for exterior. Also had a little play with the Johnstones visualiser thingy on their website and very straightforward, I've never had any joy with the Dulux one.

I agree with Hugh re supervision plus by the time the extension is built your son will be nearing an age where he understands a little more. You may also want him in there to cook with you soon. I'm sure the kitchen can be designed from a safety aspect too if that's the only thing holding you back. I think the advantage of using OnePlan is that Karen can look at the whole house spatially etc and you're not tied to a particular kitchen company (I'm not on commission!). Click on her profile for reviews etc. I second Hugh's comments re karndean too! I like the heringbone parquet! If you did want to hire an interior designer (designers tend to be qualified in planning too I think as opposed to an interior decorator although many of those could be qualified by experience) then you could find you save as much as you spend. Some of them will offer you their trade discount which if doing the whole house could add up to an awful lot. They may also make you save from any mistakes and I've made a few of those! I'd go on houzz and search for pros and look at their reviews and previous work. I think you need to meet people yourself though as it's important to have a good working relationship and make sure they understand you

What irritates me and causes me to just skim through most stories, is the fact they always seem to focus on houses/apartments/gardens that are either ridiculously expensive, impractical for daily life, huge, highly "designed" and staged or simply reflecting the style/colour/trend du jour and rarely reflect the types of houses the majority of us live in or within our budgets. Not everyone wants to be on the cutting edge all the time. Inspiration is good, but reality every now and then is better. It's no use perpetually showing images of massive NY loft apartment'esque open plan spaces, when many of us live in relatively modest semis or bungalows. Or depicting spacious, open plan overly staged living kitchens, typically in navy blue or a range of greys, with the ubiquitous three pendants over an island the size of a small country. With Crittal bi-fold doors, giving panoramic views over stately gardens as far as the eye can see. With space for a refectory table to seat 20, acres of storage and a whole suite of nubuck (or latterly teal/mustard velvet) sofa and comfy chairs, with giant art pieces and space for a couple of large dogs on the pristine limestone floor, which runs seamlessly out onto a highly staged patio. When real life means a lot of people can barely squeeze an average size table in their kitchen/diner or have to compromise on storage to fit a dishwasher in. The same could be said about the gardens, I'm very interested in gardens, particularly planting schemes and the more natural side of a garden, so consequently I'm sick of literally seeing the same cookie cutter, urban style paving and patios, uninspiring meagre planting and statement plants in pots over and over again. I think there needs to be a balance of aspirational inspiration and real life reality, that appreciates that folks maybe on a limited budget, aren't that creative or don't want to be the epitome of trend or fashion and just want the best home for them (without feeling like they're just not trendy/cool/out of step), so they too can take something away from the stories/editorials. Consequently, I rarely go to that part of that website because I am nearly always disappointed.
