Can I paint these dark Melamine wardrobes? would the paint chip?
Comments (11)As said before, you will need a bonding primer. Two I know of are zinsser bullseye 123 primer and Owatrol ESP (easy surface primer). Both of these (and there might be other brands as well) can be used without sanding the surface first but remember to sugar soap them first to remove residues. Haven't used the zinsser but heard a lot of good things about it. ESP is expensive but goes a long way, basically it creates a film which etches into the surface beneath it. Two or three top coats of chosen paint finish, job done. I've used ESP on veneer and it does bond really well but can't speak for it's longevity, paint chipping, knocks etc. might be as well to use a multi purpose primer after the bonding primer and then the top coats. Use a foam gloss roller for a nice even finish. This sounds a bit confusing so steps are: 1. Sugar soap surface 2. Wipe off sugar soap 3. Bonding primer, follow instructions 4. Multi use primer or top coat 5. 2-3 layers of top coat. Alternatively you could you use Annie Sloan chalk paint which also doesn't require sanding first and use a clear wax or lacquer to finish....See MorePainting beams with wall paint?
Comments (5)We painted our traditional black beams in F&B Smoked Trout, but it took 5 layers - 2 x stain/colour block coats, 1 x F&B Undercoat and then 2 x F&B Smoked Trout in the dead flat finish. Looks great but by the time he'd finished it, the OH said never again! Before After Given the choice I'm sure he would have preferred to have slapped on some of the ceiling white emulsion, but the dark black colour kept bleeding through. If the beams have started out in a light colour, I'd certainly give emulsion a go. If they were darker or the traditional black colour, I think you may find you'll have bleed-through problems which will make the beams discoloured against the white ceiling. The giant beam in our bedroom took 3 coats of colour block/stain and two of satin....See MoreWoodchip Wallpaper Over Lime Plaster Walls
Comments (4)Steve, I would line the walls after rigourous preparation work. One thing you could do is cross line the walls. Basically this is to make good the walls with easi-fill (with the woodchip paper off), rub down and size the walls with a thinned out coat of paste. Let the size dry fully and hang lining paper either vertically or horizontally. Once hung and dried, look at the condition of the walls re-fill the bad areas again and rub down. Just size the filled areas only and then re-line the walls in the crossed direction of the first hang. So if you hung vertically on the first, hang horizontally on the second hang and vice versa. Once complete paint as normal. You should see a marked difference in the smoothness of the walls,...See MorePainting stained garden furniture?
Comments (7)I’m a bit of a veteran at this. All furniture with a stain or varnish reacts differently, often within the same piece let alone within a set. If you’re going to paint it, sand down any loose or damaged bits so they’re smooth. Then invest in a good quality stain blocker (look at the Zinsser range) or an all purpose primer which blocks stains. Apply as the manufacturer recommends. This’ll give you a good base for the paint. Then paint whatever colour you want with good quality exterior paint (you may need two coats). I don’t usually need a separate undercoat. Despite what I’ve seen on YouTube, read and tried myself, do not use a chalk paint (waxed or other finish). It’s too soft. Good luck. Just a couple of examples below....See MoreTani H-S
