Help needed on living room: rug, fireplace, cushions
Comments (12)First of all, you aren't clueless :) I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :). Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy: Otherwise maybe a couple of small mirrors that you can also off set and put in a group, which would also add height: I'd do three or five of different sizes and shapes. I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:...See MoreNeed help with 1920's brick fireplace

Comments (32)I'm with the people who say your fireplace should stay. I suspect it's the way it's currently presented that has put you off. Your idea of the Hague blue is lovely and would complement the warmth of the tiling on the fireplace. Keep it simple and paint the wood fire surround in white for a crisp finish. (And if you don't like it that way, you can either change the colour or the surround - whichever your budget will allow! ) Are you keeping the dado? It would look crisp painted white with your Hague blue covering the walls. Or you might like to paper below and paint the blue above it, as Tracy Metro does. Have a look online while the new series of House Doctor is still available to see her design tricks. Not always my cup of tea, but the effects are stunning and it's always helpful for inspiration!...See MoreHelp! Remodelling a fireplace and desperately need some advice
Comments (15)I think what is blocking your ideas is the issue that any shelves built into these alcoves will be sat in the middle of a wall and usually this type of alcove would extend to the corner. Because of this issue I think that you should either:- Block up the alcoves and so you only have to find a fireplace that you like. Cover the alcoves with doors that looks like the wall and have invisible touch catches. Build in the alcoves but run skirting and coving in front of the space so that you can read the main room. Knock out the chimney brickwork so that your log burner is sat in the middle of a wider space. Treat the whole of the recessed space as one and run a hearth across all of it and give the walls in the recesses and across the chimney the same treatment for uniformity....See Morehappyleg
