Landscape planning

Hello, I have a small area in my backyard that I use for the patio speaker and for some plants. I layed matrix landscape fabric pinned to the ground and then over it some landcape rocks. What I want to know is do I need to place mulch over the fabric and then the rocks or is the rocks over the fabric ok?

It depends if you don't mind seeing the fabric in between the rocks. If you don't want to see it, then a bark chipping type mulch would be ideal, it would be more effective all over with the rocks on top but you could just lay it in between the rocks, but I don't think that would give you such a neat and finished look.

Will the bark chipping help against weeds vs just having the rocks?

Hi. I think pruning the roots on a birch tree would be prohibitively expensive( and probably pointless). Ideally trees need to drop their own leaves onto their own roots and for nature to take its course in terms of temperature control and moisture retention etc. As soon as there is human intervention the roots will suffer, from compaction, dehydration or just severance. Certain trees will 'put up' with interference better than others. Birch is a colonising species and therefore fairly tough. I think your options are as follows; cut straight through the roots and take a chance that the tree will be unaffected. Stop the edging where you have and start again a similar distance the other side. Or you mention slabs to the lawn edge? if you are laying them horizontally as in a patio, lay the ones over the roots on sharp sand or a very lean mix of sharp sand /cement. If you are using 100mm x 1000mm slabs as edging, get a local builder to cut one piece lengthwise and don't dig it in so far. Like the idea of central water feature (would ditch the trees but keep large grass surround). Could even add a shallow water moat effect around grass but this may be a step too far!!! Probably would choose a light stone colour to compliment the house pillars and add lighting for extra effect at night. For parking would use the grass areas either side. Check out possible alternatives to tarmac (think you can get some kind of composite stone/gravel resin mix) which would give you more colour options but still great for bikes. May be able to add some kind of integral design pattern using colour in parking area either side so stays symmetrical but adds some interest (bit like when you see paved parking space outlined in another complimentary coloured paving). Add low level border (even just coloured gravel and stone curbing) around perimeter/base of all 3 hedges and up-lighting for wow factor at night. Have a nosey around the neighbourhood and see what others have done. Definitely get a reputable landscaper on board for their design input, they should know latest materials available and any pitfalls. Beautiful house, good luck with renovations

@vv0123 thank you! I restored the windows back to how they would have been originally. The original transom (I think it is called) would have been stone but my dad made mine from timber and I painted it. A couple of houses on my street still have the original feature so I was able to make sure mine looked correct. The two windows were then fitted either side. The windows are plastic but I went for the half/half openers, again to make them look more like original sash windows, plus some of the windows are over 6ft high so it makes them easier to open. The windows came from a local window company in Manchester my dad occasionally fits for. Hope that answers all your questions :)

I think a winding path with shrubs and tall grasses at intervals would be lovely in your garden, and give a feeling of "what's around the corner?". If you are painting I would make the back of the garden and one fence side darker to create some width and depth. The other side could be a lighter colour like the blue or even bright orange if you want to blend with your neighbour's. I used Cuprinol Shades in Willow on one of my boundaries and it is beautiful winter and summer as a backdrop to planting , and in its own right. Don't use cheap stuff , you will rue the day when you have to repaint it all again because of flaking. A good quality paint in a couple of ciates will last 3 to 5 years. If you don't load the brush too much at the creases you will avoud runs going through the other side. Oil your deck once a year with a natural or lightly coloured deck stain and it will last and look beautiful . Enjoy

The landscape fabric will do that, what goes on top is for aesthetics really. So providing the fabric is all over the places where the weeds are, this should keep them down.

Having said that, if it's going to be "permanent" it's a good idea to thoroughly dig over and weed the ground or maybe consider applying weedkiller. before the fabric goes down. That way you stand the best chance of properly conquering any weeds.

No worries:) when I said patio speaker i meant a speaker that people use outside usually in the patio for music. In my case I have a rock for a speaker to blend in with the landscape.
