Gorgeous White Composite Door

Our client needed to change their old front door as security had become an issue. People could see straight through to their kitchen and they couldn't attach a chain. Their new white composite door has obscured glass and a chain for extra security.

Hi Jason, I like your creativity and I can see why the white melamine doors might appeal. I haven't used these specifically but have used high gloss painted solid timber doors and they were beautiful. These do have a timber effect on the edge which I would want to see at least photos of and I would consider the surface finish as a matt mottled door might be a little underwhelming in a gorgeous timber filled space. Melamine does last, but again so does timber. Timber when chipped can be fixed, melamine, not so easily. Also because there are no panels and the surface is very regular, you might notice scratches more than a 5 panel door or one with some kind of features in it (on white melamine scratches usually look darker). Plastic is heavy and so you will get a heavier feeling door, although a thicker door with well fitted hinges and handles will also give you a more solid feel. Also the sound quality coming from a melamine door will be different to a timber door (I am not bias from one to the other, I am just thinking of the things I would consider when thinking about the whole end result). Many of the developers I work with use Premdor, so the company is solid. To answer your question, I would always call them up and ask for samples of the melamine finish in a few different shades and gloss, matt and mottled. Then I would be confident with my decision. When guessing is involved you are relying on luck and that rarely goes too well. Doors are expensive, you want to love them when they arrive not hope for the best. In terms of being a pain to fit, I would ask for predrilled holes, but you will need to know your hardware and ironmongery or speak to your chippy first before ordering and see how much experience he has with it, as he has a very small margin of error! Composite door with UPVC sidelights - will I hate it?

Morning! We went with a chartwell green wood effect composite door which looks quite authentic itself. We had an original leaded window on the side of the porch which nobody could see which the door people restored and put into secure double glazing panels for the door and sidelights. The UPVC shiny white frame, I don't like so much. But as you see there is a lot of frame so it would have been a lot more money to do in in green frame. It is also safe and keeps the house warmer. On balance, I'm happy with the compromise. Still have plans down the line to redo the front garden (well make it into a garden and not a breezeblock parking lot for multiple cars we don't own - but the previous owners with older children did). Thinking Med garden with low level fencing in charteuse green, lavenders, beige gravel etc. Maybe cypress or olive trees left and right of the door. I'm sure that will improve the whole frontage and take emphasis away from the frame.

Yes. Its quite normal for the front door to be a different colour to the windows. In fact if you take a look around your neighbourhood you'll probably notice that its the norm.

CD and Sonia - thanks for your lovely comments. I’m definitely not bold! The other houses in the estate are white rendered properties and no one else has the porch so not able to compare to see what things would look like but I’ll probably be demonised if i did anything strong! . The sage options look worth exploring. Didn’t even think of green hues - was so fixated on thinking of variations of the grey/ brown theme. I did think pale blue as you see a lot of designs that put brown and blue / turquoise together but my husband is totally against that option . I’ve been pouring over the RAL colour chart as I have to link it to those . RAL 7038 looks similar. The front of the house is south facing so in the day it is a bit lighter . Other ideas on that theme RAL 7030, RAL 7032 , RAL 7035, RAL 7038, RAL7044. My husband thinks RAL 7036, RAL 7004 which are definitely greyer. Could get very expensive with tester pots!
