How do I deal with this mess?
Comments (27)I'm not sure but check with your codes department. Here where we live its a felony to not complete the work and take all the money. If he is insured through the state with his license than they can pull his bond. Worth a try....See MoreWhat to put on walls in downstairs toilet - what do you have?
Comments (15)Hi Dynamo, I'm responsible for the design in your photo and delighted you like the look of this room. You would only need a few square meters of the split mosaic tiles which are available of sheets, so not expensive for a striking feature. Also, easy to keep free of dust with a quick once over with a dust pan brush, or brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner . WC's are often overlooked but when you consider its a room you use every day and your guests use too, why not make it an enjoyable experience! An alternative and very inexpensive idea for your walls and my signature in practically every home I renovate, is installing 6mm MDF panelling with a 10mm shadow gap in between each panel, apply with Pink Gripfil adhesive. 600mm x 600mm square or horizontal panels of any height add a sense of depth and soul to boring flat, painted walls. A sheet of MDF is cheap as chips, just make sure you prime and undercoat thoroughly with a mini roller before applying eggshell finish or acrylic paint. It's not a main bathroom so not susceptible to humidity, therefore emulsion paint in a contrast shade will work well too. To see an example of panelling on a larger scale (Wenge stained Oak veneered MDF), take a look at the sitting room wall in the Chelsea Harbour apartment featured on my profile page....See MoreHave I messed up my dado rails?
Comments (6)Thanks for the comments guys, there are no spindles under the bannister going up the stair as it is backed purely by wall. The trouble with not having a rail going up is what colour to paint that wall? Would it be top or bottom colour? If you look at pic 2, without the rail there is no barrier between the two on that wall... so the staircase would be a different colour on the left than on the right?...See MoreDo I take down the plaster and the ceilings as well? Bricks look faded
Comments (19)When you talk of removing plaster, do you realise that in a modern house like yours the plaster is likely to be a skimming of plaster over plaster board so basically its impossible to just remove the plaster. To take this all back to basics, you need to understand what your house is constructed of - what makes up it’s layers, so to speak - and how its constructed. When you start to get quotes from trades, say an electrician, they will tell you what they want, such as cutting out channels for the trunking, wiring etc. Don’t start taking out everything in your house without taking some advice from a builder. Also remember any builder worth their salt will be busy and don’t pay anyone ANY money up front. they will invoice you for work they have completed. Don’t take the ceilings down or try to get the plaster off until you’ve spoken to a plasterer. Again, plasterers are hard to get hold of as there is so much housebuilding going on and belive me its not a job you can do yourself. (Unless you are a plasterer). Also, as you are a beginnner, you will have plenty to worry about other than the colour of the bricks! If the bricks of neighbouring houses look similar then possibly it’s weathering. As long as the pointing is good, don’t worry. Also bear in mind the shortage of materials and increasing costs when you are planning work. having said all that it is exciting and rewarding to do up one’s home. Good luck and enjoy!!...See MoreMaths Wife
