How can the pipework on this basin be tidied up?
Have a showdown meeting with builder in coming week about work done on a kitchen extension - this is the sink fitted in a new downstairs loo. I can't disguise the ugly pipework with a cupboard because it's a very tight space. I suspect it's a bodge job like everything else...

Comments (6)Not so much an eyesore as a blank canvas to take a free hand in! That will be far easier to see from your point of view if you start with a clean-up. Remove all the debris from the foot of the rear fence and that at the foot of the shed, along with the couple of concrete fence posts. Trim away the low twigs from the tree. Replace the tatty looking fence on the borders you are responsible for (as marked on your title deeds) with a better quality close board fence. Talk with your neighbours about the possibilities of replacing the rest of it. Leave the shed until you have got the debris cleared, the fence sorted out and are ready with your new plan. Then wood-treat the shed to blend in, or to match the new fence. Voila! Infinitely better already. You can now see you have a flexible space with a nice tree to offer shade on a hot day and lots of possibilities to choose from. Comments (2)Adding a slide over surface could help hide things in the sink ? Either a wooden or composite type surface that's larger than the sink but doesn't interfere with the tap (and new soap dispenser ) try TK Maxx or similar for a good selection of wooden and composite type chopping boards maybe ? Adding a hanging rail for dish cloths over a washing up bowl stored in the under sink cabinet might keep things handy - and can be rinsed and emptied as an when needed . Comments (3)Hi Paul, It looks to me that the bricks on the side are a later addition. They don't appear to match or intersect with the original red brickwork. I would suggest getting an old blunt chisel/brick bolster and a heavy lump hammer and just knocking these off - I don't think it'll be much trouble and doesn't take an expert. For the brickwork itself you can try using a firm wire brush to remove some of the black discolouration but it may not make much difference. I know you can get some acids that clean up brick but I don't have any experience with that. Finally I would suggest getting someone experienced in to do the re-pointing which will smarten it up a lot. Comments (31)In our new kitchen we got a double drawer dishwasher, so we always have space for dirty stuff. Our tea towels and hand towels live on a pull out rail in the left hand cupboard (where the rinse aid and washing tablets also live) and washing up brush, washing up liquid and sponges & cloths, live under the sink in a drawer in the right hand cupboard. Everything gets done in the dishwasher, other than roasting pans, saucepans etc, which get hand washed, drained for a while and then finished off with the tea towel and put way more or less right away. Other than that, there's only our expensive wine glasses, that get washed and dried immediately. All of which tends to keep the area quite clear all the time. I would say that the greatest difference has been made by the double dishwasher, we always used to have dirty stuff hanging around waiting, either for the dishwashing to finish, or waiting for it to be emptied of clean stuff....See MoreClaudia Cooper

4 years agoI think if you wanted the walls chasing you should have said in advance as the cost would have been quiet different from the job they did.
I think chasing the wall could be more expensive than swapping this inexpensive basin for an inexpensive vanity

4 years agoI would get a small, thin vertical box over the pipes as they come out the wall up to the underside of the sink that would be painted the same colour as the wall. Then get your builder to extend the fixed copper piping higher up the wall to reduce the bulk at the point where the pipes come out the wall, to ensure the box size is minimal. The silver flexible pipes that attach to the underside of the taps come in various lengths, get these replaced with much shorter ones so the connections on the water taps that are adding bulk are away from the pipe work to reduce width of boxing but within boxing so you have 2 neat silver tap connector exiting the top of the box. For the waste water get a chrome pipe to come out of the boxing on the wall that connects to a chrome trap and then sits neatly under your plug. The boxing should be therefore be minimal.
