For me the trick is defiantly positioning lay some down and stand some up, add some personal decorative pieces to break up the books Play with height and groupings of things maybe put something tall with 2 smaller things add some pictures or even those little boards with sayings on. Mostly though I think it's important too add some beautiful things that mean something to you and incorporate them with your books.

It looks very cute. If the new place is south facing, I would leave painting until you've been in a little while just to check out the light. It could be that duck egg would work better to cool things. Your sofas are very subtle so I don't think it would be too much. Another idea is to build on the gold with the White, if the room isn't too bright. My mum has this paper from laura Ashley which is really subtle, the background is off white so you could paint 3 walls with this or something similar as a feature wall.

lots of people have had a good input on colour schemes - colour is a very personal choice .... whether you go for classic rich colour or something more neutral with longevity ... The one thing I would really consider doing is to remove the shelves from either side of the fireplace or at least make them shallower in depth and definitely go for a statement wallpaper or contrasting colour on the fireplace wall. this would make a real feature in the room and less oppressive, opening it up - the existing shelving as practical as it may be really dominates. I appreciate it is probably more of a case of practicality. Also depends on what your office is trying to do for you .... do you need a showcase office to impress visitors, are you there all office hours, ..... colour can create an ambience a mood, relaxing you or giving you a headache ..... ! Most interior designers refer to a certain colour range on the market (F&B) all their colours are quite relaxing even thought they me be deep colours check them out and use them as a starting point - you can always adjust the colour slightly by getting one mixed specially if they are not quite what you want. Oh and on the point of atmosphere - think I would be inclined to add neutral wood to warm up the room ... the floor looks good for sanding down. Good Luck and please post the results.

Thanks so much for these responses! Yes string shelving would be a great idea and would add lightness to the room while keeping the style. Unfortunately the external wall is also insulated with plasterboard because of damp problems so it would be quite complicated and risky to hang anything on it. I have now bought a Brouer Mobelfabrik rosewood bookcase for the one side . After it is in place, I will have to see whether an additional piece would work for the other side But all these are good ideas as I have another room with an internal wall where primary colours and string shelving would look great Thanks for your advice!
