Fireplace replace surround or paint existing with new burner

We are replacing the wood burner in a house we have just moved into. The marble surround will be cut out a little and the new burner will sit in the recess so won’t stick out anymore. I’m unsure what to with the wooden surround ? painted a different colour or more of a simple surround with a wooden beam perhaps

The question is: Heat??

When recessed, will the surround paint hold up? Will the wood even be safe?

(Perhaps you can sell the current one and build a tiled surround? What's your home's style? And yours?)

Hi, I was just wondering what material the surround of the fire place is? The neutral/grey theme for the room sounds great. There's some really good neutral paints available at the moment, I love the selection of paints Farrow and Ball have to offer via Homebase. In regards to the fireplace I wouldn't paint it unless you know its your only option and depending on the material of the surround. If so I wouldn't paint it the exact colour of the walls, maybe a couple of shades darker to make it a feature, not something you are trying to conceal. You could reconsider your colour scheme if its not possible to paint/change the fireplace, making the chimney wall an off white as to not clash with the bronze. You could still have parts of the room a very pale neutral grey, or channel the neutral scheme through soft furnishings and accessories. I hope you get a good result either way, good luck.

A stove can look stark in an old fireplace, and the oak mantelpiece and corbels look great Laura. But is it safe to store the wood so close? Please do check that out perhaps with the local fire brigade home inspection team, as it dries it will become tinder dry and a fire started will wreak such havoc. i understand monoxide alarms are compulsory certainly if let, and failure to get certificates annual chimney sweeping void insurance, and air vents are also mandatory depending on stove size. Storing wood is such a problem, I'm sure there are lots of fantastic ideas out there........ We had the fire moved further out onto the granite hearth (as was agreed when ordered) to ensure more heat came into the room there was not room for an eco fan on top, so I connected three computer fans on a strip of wood, with integral LED lights red green and blue fans, and powered by a small 12v supply so I can run in series or parallel to control air flow. That works well and the light reflects subtly underneath and at sides of the fire. If I was starting from scratch I would have the fire much more exposed and the chimney to get the most out of the heat. The magnetic chimney thermometer is useful. hth. Still waiting to get the room redecorated and re carpeted 4 years after being installed. The salmon pink was just to cover the old wallpaper and new plaster, but i've grown to like it!

Thanks. Oh yeah, we're definately doing other rooms ! The whole house from top to bottom eventually. This room was top priority as it's the sitting room, we wanted to put our 'stamp on the place'. We've only been moved in since the start of the year. This is the before room, taken from the Estate Agents listing: .......... And now (trying to take a pic from the same place) The conservatory is hard to change, pic taken from the Estate Agents listing: ....... And now (taken this morning) - currently has our old sofa in there until we find some conservatory furniture that doesn't look like it belongs in a 1970's old peoples home. Only change is really the addition of blinds The study pic taken from the Estate Agents listing: .......... and now it's my man cave / music room And then .............. The current kitchen is getting ripped out and a new one put in starting 30th May. There is also a dividing wall that's being taken down between the kitchen and dining room to allow for a breakfast bar and a much bigger space. Looking at room freshly plastered I think the walls might look best a colour the same “strength” or depth of colour as the plaster if you know what I mean?? Whether it’s a peachy dirty pink or green or dusky blue?? Looking forward to seeing how this room turns out :)
