Can you please advise me how we can decorate my elderly mother's loung
Comments (10)I would start with her bedroom, that's the area she wil rest. Keep it neutral and and peaceful. Make the curtains cheerful that will be the first thing she'll see when she wakes up. A four feet bed will be comfortable for her and find out how much it will cost to raise the bed ...at a certain age it is more comfortable to get in and out of. Table lamps which by a touch will light up a big alarm clock... Older people always want to know the time! Two bedside tables. Soft carpet for her feet and a big collage on the wall with photos of her family. I would get rid of the wardrobe is is so huge and if you look on your local ebay and put you postcode in you will be able to get a good bargain. Look for a comfy chair too with a floorlight for reading. If space a nice little table (local ebay) will make it complete. Your mum prefers her wall painted but again a roll of cheerful wallpaper for one wall in her bedroom will make it special for her. Try to get rid of all the clutter like those two shopping trolleys perhaps in a cupboard in the hall? I have done a lot of houses up on a shoestring and it is a challenge but can be so satisfying. One thing I have learnt ....ALWAYS finish one room completely before going on to the next room. It helps when you feel a bit down about the project and one look in the finished room gives one a big boost to continue!!! Comments (8)Would it be possible to take down the wall between the kitchen and the unsued space and extend the kitchen out a bit? Or if not, put in an internal window sized opening with a counter top, barstools one side and worktop and cupboards on the kitchen side. Kitchen planners are usually free, I'd get them to look at what you can do with your space and even if you cant afford to do the kitchen now, at least you know what you can do with the space and work around that idea to get a long term picture. If you want to leave the walls as they are, how about buying a 6 cube IKEA Kallax Unit and putting it beside where you first walk in to create a small divider between the entrance and the dining room. As they are open shelving, it will still let the light through but create the illusion of a proper entrance way. You could even put the unit longways, so it is low and have a row of indoor plants along the top. Restaraunts often have to work with a large open space and make the illusion of entrance ways and separate areas so its worth keeping that in mind when you're out and about!...See MoreNo talent, no imagination - can you help with my downstairs layout!
Comments (27)It was pricey but half of it was for planning. Yes I think my mum was hoping to get the whole kitchen done on the first quote ie including kitchen, floor and appliances! I haven't used the links no. Here's something that will help re finding an architect https://www.architecture.com/FindAnArchitect/Assets/Documents/Workingwithanarchitectforyourhome.pdf and another one on costs http://www.architect-yourhome.com/cost-estimator/ there's also an online architect service that a few people have recommended, will try and find the name of them. You can also look in the pro section on Houzz for architects in your area as hopefully they will also include reviews. It will also be key to have the kitchen and bathroom designed properly (and the overall space). The architect can probably do that or speak to someone like Karen at OnePlan ( above) who can probably also help with some cost saving ideas. I LOVE those first doors, would much rather have those than bifolds personally!...See MoreHuge living room, very dated!
Comments (18)Personally I don't think you need to extend to make the kitchen or bathroom bigger. However there are a few jobs that I would prioritise to sell it. Decorate everywhere, get rid of gloss on ceilings, add quality, substantial coving to the main reception room. I would also consider if the "mahogany" skirting board and doors are high enough quality to keep- they may be better painted. Personally I would spend the most time remodelling the kitchen. I suspect if you reduced the number of doors and windows you could refit it and make it seem bigger without extending. I think that the family bathroom is plenty big enough but the corner bath is a dated choice. An inexpensive white replacement suite could do wonders for selling. Flooring- I think you are right to consider carpet. For selling this may well be the fastest most inexpensive flooring choice. Curtains- personally I think the pole position dates the decor. I think the windows need wider poles positioned higher. Since you are going to be buying some stuff for this house have you considered employing a designer as they can help coordinate the look and have trade discounts that may well go a long way to offset their fee. So best of luck- it looks like a fab house...See MoreE D
