At what point do you hire an interior designer
Comments (21)ksgrant . . . . . I was on a very tight budget, but knew I was going to hit a wall and need a designer consult. I had space plan drawings for my kitchen and used the design services (free w/ cabinet purchase, CAD) to complete the space. I also had very specific inspiration photos that reflected the same perspective as the space, i.e. window placement over sink (light), position of appliances, prep sink. I paid close attention to how I intended to use the space, needed prep space for a least three cooks. I read a lot about the "triangle". Mostly I spent a lot of time with the plans and considering materials in relation to the inspiration photos. For instance, I wanted soapstone but it was out of budget and went with honed black granite to get the same look. Another example is that I wanted the kitchen to have some of the same elements as the old one to reflect the period of the house, so I had venting added to cabinet piece in front of the sink. Houzz was not available at the time, I would have posted some plans/materials here for more input and suggestion. Feel free to email me at tirgoddess.com for any other questions, happy to help. More than anything, take your time and do your research....See MoreIf you were to change the look of your home...
Comments (77)I have always been attracted to the Carmel-by-the-Sea houses designed by Comstock...the interiors are often decorated casually, with comfy sofas, chairs, maple & cherry furniture and nature-inspired art and accessories. Big fantasy. In real life, we are retired on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and live in a 1200 sq.ft. condo one block off a large town's Main St. and two miles from any beach. Except for the building and location, we have the rest...not sure if our decor is English casual, English coastal or ???, but I wouldn't change it, except to buy better quality sofa and chairs....See MorePOLL: Has your style changed?
Comments (12)Totally agree with Stebonheath. Our parents and grandparents had lots of things in their rooms; a hangover from the Victorian age. Today we demand brighter lighter interiors and large dark furniture and porcelein ladies are totally out of fashion. Whilst I am not a fan of totally open plan layouts, it does make rooms appear much larger than they are. My parents house faced a park with mature trees and we had lace curtains totally covering the windows then heavy lined velvet curtain on top, to be closed after dinner. My windows only have the light curtains closed when dark. It makes a huge difference....See MoreIf a celebrity or famous designer could design your home....
Comments (11)I'm with Jo DP, I wouldn't let her within a beagle's gowl (as my mother would have said) of any home of mine either. It would depend where I was living, I'm rather taken with Abigail Ahern at the moment but more for her quirky side than her addiction to VERY dark interiors. If I had the higher ceilings and huge windows that I long for we might be able to work together without arguing too much but I have to draw the line at an entire house painted black :D Or maybe Tricia Guild who has managed to consistently produce interiors that I drool over for more than a decade now but again I think some of that is down to the stunning homes she works with. To be honest I have such strong, and varied, opinions about design that I would be a nightmare client and would probably drive most well known designers to drink and I certainly wouldn't trust the judgement of some celebrity, they'd probably drive me to drink.......See MoreAMB
