Window seat or no window seat?
We can't decide whether to lower a window to allow for a window seat. Purpose: reading or kids to sit and talk to the person cooking (me). Will also allow for under seating storage. Please help!

4 years agoI vote.... yesss! I love a window seat! I know my kids would use it for their homework, have a bite, read, play games... they always love to be laying down! And the dog would love it too! I am thinking of having one when our extension is being done: quite low, wide enough, comfortable, with a open-able (?) window, with plants right next to it... so you feel you are seating in the greenery. The storage space is a bonus!

Comments (8)We are having one... it’s worth it for us as it will provide a comfy place to sit and chat to whoever is cooking, we don‘t have space for a sofa in the kitchen area. Plus it will allow extra light in due to the glass roof. And hopefully it will be a bit of a wow feature. However a normal window has the benefit of allowing extra kitchen units under it, or you could have a door which allows an extra access to the garden. Both these can be opened for ventilation which a glass box can’t. Plus they cost less (I think). I think the pros and cons are quite evenly balanced. Comments (3)Hi Denny1234. Your window seat will be a feature in the room so it's great that you don't want it to be too matchy-matchy. You've chosen earthy tones for your room and I think almost any of the Vanessa Arbuthnott fabrics will give you a range of colour and pattern to choose from - see example image - the weave of these fabrics is close and great quality so they will stand quite rough treatment, (I'd avoid embroidered fabrics if you have cats). And I think almost all her patterns will work with the pattern you've chosen for the wallpaper. Your local curtain and fabric shop will make the window seat for you. Comments (2)Though a veneer may not fluctuate in size like real oak it will wear out far quicker than a window seat made of solid oak, a very long lasting material. I think the judgement you have to make is whether the surfaces of your window seat need to be that hard wearing, the jointing and edges will also have to be well detailed to achieve something that looks as good as solid oak....See Moreexterior picture window seat
Comments (3)Lots of places offer this sort of window but yes, you usually have a builder to build the frame of the seat to the house and then you buy the window itself. or you can buy a window as a single unit which we have done a few times in clients' designs - in which case there are several companies you can talk to. 4 years agoI think you need to be critical about if this kitchen layout gives you an appropriate amount of kitchen cabinetry and work surface for the size of house as it seems to have as much as a modest apartment.
You might consider a different layout

4 years agoThanks everyone and thanks for the floorplans Johnathan. Based on the water source being at the rear the first plan could work well. I've added the rest of the ground floor excl utility (containing WC/utility sink/boiler/Washing machine/Tumble). I agree Maths Wife - the pantry and utility doorways are a pain. Both walls surrounding are structural.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoSure, i don't see why not, i just put one in as i preferred it with, but you don't have to have one. At least you end up with a lot more kitchen this way. The first design was very tiny.
Just to clarify, as i'm not sure the measurements on the plan are quite correct. If you could confirm all the dimensions in red, as without these, I fear the plan is a little inaccurate.

I think a few things need a tweak. I don't think there's enough room for patio doors and the window seat. As you have a side garden, i'd consider two sets of patio doors.
As the main garden is to the rear, i'd put in a window between bank units and island.
I would not put windows in the dining room, as I think it spoils the walls. If there are windows there currently, i'd even consider bricking them up.
I'd like to know where the current Utility comes to, as maybe that impacts the possibility of the window between cabinets and hob.

4 years agoThanks Maths Wife. Unfortunately the utility comes across to meet the proposed sink - I wish it didn't. The wall with the chimney breast is south facing and the windows either side flood the dining area with light. Would the space between the units be too dark (without the new proposed window). We have considered just having french doors on the south side and replacing the current window on the rear with a large picture window above a sink - like attached but much taller/wider. It would be great to know your thoughts.
