Rod pockets or rings for these curtains?

I’m going to rehang these dining room curtains using a beefier white rod mounted higher on the wall near the ceiling. Should I simply run the thicker rod through the generous top pocket, OR use the typical rod rings with clips attached? (I don’t expect that we’ll want to move these curtains along the rod much.)

Hi Pauline the best and only solution for black out is to install blackout lined curtains. Silent Gliss Wave tracks will look good but are expensive and the stack back ( when the curtains are open ) is not as efficient as with other heading styles. The most cost effective hanging system is for a standard track with inverted pleat heading. Other hanging system which is much more cost effective is Distinction pole which is neat and contemporary looking. Dont be tempted with any sort of blinds on these types of windows. Roller blinds will become unbalanced very quickly with the air movement with the door open; you get scuff / dirt marks on the base of the blind when it is down; roman blinds will be huge expanses of flat fabric, slow to lift up and with a big stack at the top. Any other cassette style blinds work ok on smaller windows but will spoil the effect in this room with loads of quite large casing to fit them into. Hi, I personally wouldn't go for any type of blind and especially not white, the whole room is that colour and it's going to look really cold. Shutters are fabulous, other people have mentioned these, but the custom made shape is going to cost! However, i think the cheapest and most sumptuous option is the curtains on two cafe rods covering the whole gable. If you are after a cheap way of doing these, you'd be surprised at who you can find on Facebook in your local area! After all, we are only talking about the material and thermal backing for one long window. They don't need header tapes, just a small pocket for a cafe rod on each side. So they are basic in their sewing requirements.

For my first roman blind I used a roman blind kit from Dunelm, worked out great. I then used those instructions to go on to make a further 12 (never buy a house with 5 sided bay windows!) and purchased the bits needed from terrysfabrics as mentioned by Catherine Byrne. They are really straightforward. The key is to take your time with your measurements/calculations and with ensuring your edges and rod pockets are straight.

Hi Jack, You said you want curtains and also wanted a really neat and balanced solution. The problem with curtains is that they will always have to be pushed to the side to get in and out of inward-opening doors. As there is some space between the top of the doors and the ceiling, yes, another option is blinds. When these are closed they will nestle in that space above the doors, you won't need curtain poles, and there are several different types of blinds that can be compressed tight into that space. Yes, velvet curtains soften a room, however, as blinds come in so many different colours and patterns these days, the right choice could also do that. And you could still have your preference of “dark green / teal." In the two bedrooms, blinds with a blackout fabric would block the unwanted light you mentioned. Furthermore, if they were remote-controlled they could be operated from bed, or even have timers so they opened and closed automatically at set times of the day and night. In the end it’s such a personal decision – some people love curtains and others love blinds. Hope that helps. Joy
