How can we minimise dust?!

Hello,

My husband and I are renovating a Victorian house - we've just taken down a wall between the kitchen and dining room and there is a thick layer of dust EVERYWHERE despite using an industrial hoover constantly. My husband suffers from asthma and is really struggling. The windows downstairs are unfortunately painted shut so we're unable to open windows and can't afford to replace them yet so we're keeping the back door open as much as possible while we're home.

My question is, would an air purifier help? Or is there an industrial machine we could hire to help?

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you :)

Hiya,

Dust is one of the biggest problem my clients face when it comes down to renovation work!

I would highly recommend getting those windows open, its the only way for the room to breathe naturally and release the dust out of the house. Try to contact a builder who can have a look at the windows and see if they can open them for you and reseal them after. Try to hoover the room and open the windows at the same time.

The other thing you can do is wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth. Lastly if your husband suffers from asthma it would be wise to invest in the Dyson Air Purifier. I've heard very good things about this purifier so might be worth investing, there are a few deals/financing options around as well.

Even the smallest amount of renovation work creates so much dust. I do sympathise as I’m asthmatic too (reactive). As Rukmini suggests, try to get those windows open to create a through flow (front and back). Even hoovering can blow dust about, so its best he is out of the house when you hoover. Dusting with a damp cloth collects more dust than dry, but you will need to rinse out the cloth often and dust often. I’m not sure whether an air purifier would be able to filter so much dust, but worth researching, especially reviews. There are many types on the market and not all as pricey as Dyson’s!

Thankfully the furniture is not mine! I have a lot of plain white/ grey pieces, plus some plain bedsheets too, so hopefully I can detract from that dreadful wallpaper. Depending on how far you budget goes, I would look at adding traditional cornice and pelmet and replacing the plinth with a similar oyster colour. End panels for wall units could also be replaced / added. Some chessboard style tilling in 3 colours would also bring out the walls. It's hard to tell but is the oak surround also on the wall units? I haven't checked your location but this is something we can help with

Hi, I suggest you move the mirrors up , at the level of the window because they are too low , with this you will create a hight of the room , the carpet it is a problem : 1: it keeps the dust in the house and 2: you can never have a clean room with it . I also suggest get some money put a wood floor and the radiator can be cut out , moved on the floor heating , then you can decide if you want or not to create a small place to sit at the window or the corner where your closet is a small table with a chair where you can rest and have also a make-up session . Move the curtains close to the level of the ceiling and try to find a fade coloured curtain that can create an accent in the room (just because you have a patter wall that does not mean everything in the house should have a patter as well) and i suggest a plant because it keeps the air clean even when you sleep . i can try to make you a design suggestion and see more of what i am writing you, but i will need some specific measurements of the room (height- distance from the wall to the window and to the corner and after to the door , i assume that is where the master-bedroom bath is .
