Help - Design, layout help on a new extension
Comments (21)I agree with Hugh re supervision plus by the time the extension is built your son will be nearing an age where he understands a little more. You may also want him in there to cook with you soon. I'm sure the kitchen can be designed from a safety aspect too if that's the only thing holding you back. I think the advantage of using OnePlan is that Karen can look at the whole house spatially etc and you're not tied to a particular kitchen company (I'm not on commission!). Click on her profile for reviews etc. I second Hugh's comments re karndean too! I like the heringbone parquet! If you did want to hire an interior designer (designers tend to be qualified in planning too I think as opposed to an interior decorator although many of those could be qualified by experience) then you could find you save as much as you spend. Some of them will offer you their trade discount which if doing the whole house could add up to an awful lot. They may also make you save from any mistakes and I've made a few of those! I'd go on houzz and search for pros and look at their reviews and previous work. I think you need to meet people yourself though as it's important to have a good working relationship and make sure they understand you...See MoreNew layout for kitchen after side-return extension
Comments (4)Wow - these are some excellent ideas! Going to explore them in more detail for sure. My sketch is really not very accurate - the width of the room from the chimney stack to the 'pantry' side is 320cm. So I guess there is room for the large island, but now I'm rethinking the whole thing! We have put in the permitted development request to the council, so the space won't change. These suggestions will really help us finalise the layout. 1 other question. The ceiling height in the current dining space is 280cm, it then drops with a step to where the current kitchen is to 260cm. We're thinking of removing the step and making the who new extension space a floating floor to allow the existing house to breath. This will make the extension space ceiling height 245cm. Do you think this is too low or will look strange? Or should we keep the step down for the benefit of a higher ceiling in the extension section - but sacrifice the floor being able to 'breath'....See MoreNew Kitchen Extension Layout Help
Comments (13)@Jon Burchfield thanks, that looks really nice! Slight issue is that we have a pitched roof on the new side infilled area. Unfortunately planning constraints mean that the height at the wall will be 2.6m falling to just 2m. I know the velux windows are recessed into the roof but if we have tall units on that side it might block out the light, how high are the units? Having a 450mm unit in that corner would be practical but I think it would look a little odd if we had 600mm units next to it. Perhaps 450mm either end with 3 600mm in the middle would look ok? @Mark Bassage @kwg kwg Thanks. Take on board the hob suggestion from everyone. Seems sensible to have it on the other side. The oven/microwave is a tricky one, if we go with the peninsula design unless we have them under the counter then the only space would be just on the left as you enter. That's practical, but we're slightly concerned this ruins the nice open feel you would get to the left as you enter. @i-architect that is something i'd considered, first impression from the company is that it would be possible but i'm not sure why. I'll check with the builders. It would make access to the under stair cupboard a little trickier but might be more practical to make the most of the kitchen space...See MoreKitchen layout and position of doors for new extension
Comments (5)I agree that the space between the sink and hob is dangerous and this kitchen is divided by the back door. But there are many many ways this could be planned. Have you considered using a concept planner to help you visualise the layout?...See MoreJonathan
