Which trees are best for growing in a pot outdoors in Edinburgh?

I would like a tree for a small courtyard to grow in a large (barrel size) pot. An attractive bark for winter interest, or an evergreen but not a cypress.

If your courtyard is sheltered from the wind and is not in full sun all day an Acer (Japanese maple) would work well. They come in many different leaf shapes and colours and many have very attractive bark.

I’m currently researching small trees to add to my garden, and a lot of them can grow in a large pot. Firstly, fruit trees grown on a dwarf rootstock don’t grow too tall, 10’ at the most, and give you lovely blossom followed by fruit. Crabapples (Malus) have stunning blossom in spring followed by fruit which the birds love, or you can make crabapple jelly from them! Cercis, the Judas Tree, has almost cerise pink blossom in early spring, followed by lovely large leaves in summer. Amelanchier is a small tree favoured by garden designers. Frothy white flowers in spring followed by berries in autumn. Cornus Souza and Florida are lovely small trees with stunning flowers (bracts really) in early summer.

i can’t think of any evergreen trees apart from conifers, but you can try shrubs and shape them into trees by removing the lower branches as it grows. Shrubs like Viburnum, Ceanothus and Photinia respond well to shaping.

We've gone for one of each again this year. I'd echo the sentiments of the smell of the real tree being almost magical. The real tree is in the sitting room - and this is basically the wife's. She has full control over this bad-boy. She chooses the decorations, the lights, where things go, what colour scheme (for some reason the lights in this picture look blue. They're not, they're just a different 'white' - phone cameras hey). The fake tree is in the kids room (aka the conservatory) - this is decorated by the kids, and basically they just stand there and throw as much stuff as they can get their hands on in the direction of the tree and see what sticks. I did have to wait till they went to bed to 're-locate' some of the accessories, as 90% of is was only decorated up to waist level.

There's lots of great ideas for plants here, but I would strongly suggest you get answers to the following questions before you choose a plant/plants. - What direction does the wall face? - What sort of soil is there at the base of the wall? (Ask neighbours or post a photo of a spadeful of soil here which will probably let people identify the soil type) - Does water which falls on the tarmac run towards the wall or away from it? Walls cast a 'rain shadow' so if the water runs away from the wall that patch of ground is likely to be extremely dry. You would have to choose a particularly drought-resistant climber or be prepared to add extra water in some way. If you choose a plant which likes the conditions you have, it'll thrive. If you don't it will probably die and then you'll end up feeling like you're a rubbish gardener. Those Spanish Bluebells you liked are extremely tough though, and should do well wherever. ...also, if the conditions are right, I'd like to put in a word for my favourite climber, the evergreen and fast-growing Clematis armandii.

I think you could create a mini orchard on your front lawn, but how big your trees will get depends on what rootstock they were grown on. Do they still have their labels on? Basically, standard fruit trees grow to 25 ft tall and as wide, semi dwarf grow to 15 ft and as wide, then dwarf fruit trees usually grow to a max of 10 x 10 feet. I only know this because I recently bought a dwarf Apple tree, as my garden is far too small for a standard fruit tree. It looks like a spacious area, so you could add more trees, but careful what you choose as some are huge. A nice smaller tree is the Mountain Ash (Sorbus) which has lovely leaves and gorgeous berries in the autumn which the birds love. Laburnum is a small tree with beautiful hanging yellow flowers in late spring. Acers (Japanese Maples) are smaller trees in stunning shades, but they prefer dappled Shade. My favourite tree of all time is the beautiful Himalayan Birch (Betula) which has stunning white bark on the trunk and branches. The multi-stemmed one is particularly attractive. Shame, it's quite an attractive weed! Still quite tempted to keep it. Right now it's on my living room windowsill, so it's not going to cause problems for anything else, and I can keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't affect the olive tree. Any idea why it only appeared in this one pot? There are loads of pots in my greenhouse, and I haven't seen anything like this in any others. My experience of weeds is that they normally take over. The Utricularia that is in the carnivorous plant pots has spread to pretty much every pot in there, as have the various Drosera species I keep (often thought of as the weeds of the carnivorous plant world, although most of us like them).
