Design Dilemma Polls Gardens

patio pattern question

we have a new extension and new patio with the patio tiles continuing the line of the internal floor tiles going length ways. There is a step between the living area and the patio. the question is should we do the step with the tiles laid horizontally -photo 3 or continue the vertical line photo 4, helping to create more of the inside outside look

Tbh id possibly look at something else altogether, possibly a dark grey slate tile?

I agree with minnie about the curtain fabric. Very elegant. Not so keen on the wallpaper. Two points: I think the valance boxes for the curtains are too heavy and bring down the room. What is it like underneath? Could you remove them to lighten the look (or shorten the box)? Second, have you considered having a different wallpaper? Certainly I don't recommend painting over wallpaper - so far, it never works and you see the seams if not immediately, over time.

Hi, we are in a new build property (6 years old) and are only just getting round to the garden. We have a tiny patio that we're looking to extend to meet the path and also out a bit towards the back of the garden. The current slabs are of course now 6 years old. If I can track down the same slabs do you think we could just power wash the current ones and it would all look ok? Or do I need to rip up and replace the whole lot? Thanks!

Hi Mary. I think it’s a great idea to use gravel boards. With them being concrete they might need sealing?......not sure on that so maybe worth looking up. Personally I would keep the gaps in between to a minimum and use a resin or mortar grout/jointing or as mentioned setting the gravel in cement/resin stuff. Trust me getting weeds out of small gaps filled with gravel is no easy task. But if you leave fairly big gaps then groundcover plants sounds like a fab idea. You’re doing a grand job of your garden, looks like a mammoth task. I’m going really slowly taking my old paving up mainly because I’m re using stuff what I already have (messy progress so far in pic, excuse dog, he was giving me a shifty look🤔.) I’m leaving the centre circle hence my warning on the gaps. Took me at least two hours to rake out, de-gravel and weed. Cement is going in next! Love your neighbours! 🐄 I grew up next to a field with cows and used to feed them the grass off the verge, their tongues are huge! 😂.

Do you mean pebble mosaic? I have thought of doing some craft project but I am not sure if I would want to do a scale of 50m2. I like the idea but ideally I want a smooth or slightly riven surface for practicality especially where the garden table and chairs will be. The 1st patio will become a chilling area with garden sofa and Outdoor BBQ kitchen. I was thinking blue/black slate flooring to recall the blue/black bricks on the planters and pond but I am worried that the dark floor will overpower the effect.

I agree with Exacting Standard, it also helps define the fact that it is a step and therefore, you would be less likely to trip because you would know it's not a continuation.
