Amazing house. Love the slim frames on the windows and the flat roof.

Who was the windows supplier, and what sort of flat roof system was used. What is the best flat roof to go for. We are in the process of designing a contemporary house with lots of glass and a flat roof. I think the slim frames make this house, and would like to use similar in our house. We live in Scotland and so want a flat roof that can withstand heavy snow lying on it for periods in winter.

There're a few approved installers in the UK who are listed on Sky-Frame's site.

There's absolutely no issue with snow load on a flat roof, provided you have the right construction and finish.

Whereabouts in Scotland is your project? I'm from Scotland.

Hi Scott,

Firstly I must compliment you on your work, very exciting, I will definitely be keeping an eye on your web site, feel you are going to have an exciting career with your design style.

We are based just outside Aberdeen, in the countryside. Our plans have just been submitted to the planning department. It is open plan, using stone, white render, timber cladding and glass. Our aim was to design a house, that complimented its setting but also had a wow factor. I hope we achieved that.

If you don’t mind me asking, what way you did the flat roof. I am just curious, at the moment I am researching different options.

I assume the roof is pitched (opposed to flat). In which case Velux are really a very cost-effective solution. You can be fairly imaginative with the internal finishing to differentiate it looking bog-standard. For example, introducing various angles away from the rooflight. However, as an alternative, you may wish to consider one of numerous products from Glazing Vision. The Ridgeglaze Sized Rooflight would introduce a fantastic amount of natural light and a a view of the sky above but will rely on a hipped roof. Alternatively a Pitchglaze Fixed Roof Light will again flood the space with natural light within a standard pitched roof, and can be up to 3m2 in size.

If it were me and it is always down to personal preference, I like the three windows all the same size. I think you have the room to make them longer so that you catch the sun at all angles. ie go towards the doors a little . I like windows that are longer than they are wide, so rectangular rather than square. The rectangular ones let you see more of the sky line at different levels, if that makes sense. I would probably have them all electrically opening.

That's really clever. I didn't think we would have the space in the hall but we do. Thanks @Jonathan I will get the architect to redraw. I need to think through a long lounge too, the door currently cuts it into 2 thirds but maybe that's no bad thing.

Thanks all for your comments! And sorry Sonia but the island is full of pastel coloured houses, would make me feel a bit nauseous to come home to one every day (assuming we ever go out again). Husband has vetoed anything darker so Downpipe will probably stay, but like the idea of painting the external sashes the same. The more minimal the better, from our POV. In other news our proposed plywood floors are reportedly the first on the island, so we'll be making a statement if nothing else!

Hi Teresa,

Ahh, cool. All my family live in Aberdeen - I’m up there quite a bit.

No problem. It was a timber joisted roof, flat. *Then 18mm plywood with tapered insulation to fall. Or you could create the fall using timber fittings and then use constant thickness insulation (which is cheaper). If you’re using Kingspan, you’ll likely need around 140mm thickness to achieve building regs. Or that’s what we needed in Rngkand anyway. This is a warm roof. On top of the insulation we fitted a Sarnafil single ply membrane.
- the other option if you’ve a steel frame is to use a profiled metal deck ad your roof structure, then insulation and Sarnafil over this.
