Ideas for painting exterior of mock Tudor house

We have just replaced our old windows with black Crittal style windows. Now we are due to have the outside repainted as it’s all faded and looks cream/brown instead of the white and black it was originally. Our original windows were white, and now that we have changed the windows to black, I’m wondering if the black and white may look a bit much/bit harsh. So I was think of going for grey instead of the black. I’ve attached some pics below, the first one is of our house and the second shows the colour scheme I was thinking of. What are everyone's thoughts? Stick with black and white or go for something a bit different...

Jules, some locals love to moan - there’s a We Love Hitchin Facebook page which I think should be renamed We Love to Moan About Hitchin - it is hilarious! Nice name change though lol :-)

I really like the paler one, however I know any colour that isn’t black and white can divide opinion. A pub near us, 400 yrs old, has had the beams painted by the new owners in grey from black and white and the town is up in arms! I think it looks great. Some people need to get a life.......

Here’s how it looked and I’ll try and take a picture as it is now when I pop down tomorrow!

Found this pic of the newly painted pub in grey. I like it. It opened today and it’s a trendy bar/restaurant, much nicer than the old, sticky carpet pub!

Hi. That looks a lovely house. The beams on this house are painted in farrow and ball mouses' back which should look nice with your tiles and chimney. I also think drop cloth could look lovely ( a stone but doesn't have the green undertone) but it may be too light as I would choose 2 shades darker than normal for exteriors really. Or you could paint the render in it and go for lighter or darker beams. Hopefully some nice houzzers can do a render for you in your preferred colour as painting can be very expensive!

Hi, Thanks for the comments. I am looking at Accoya wood as it seems to be a good eco-friendly alternative. However, there will be a bit of hassle finding a decent joiner and then there is the whole guarantee issue. There are some good wood composite doors from Actual who I think are an Austrian company. I am looking at them as well. The U value is < 1 W/m2. Any recommendations on a good joinery who deal with Accoya? Aluminium is definitely a No at this stage. Thanks.

Sorry I know this is of no help, but I really like the look of the house as it is. It looks well kept and very attractive. Are surrounding / neighbouring houses similar? Or is this on its own? There are some very skilled people on here who maybe able to mock something up showing lighter paint or have other ideas.

This is a common dilemma on house. I think the easiest thing is to paint the wooden beams and window frames in either a pale grey or pale taupe and the render in a soft white. There are some trendy tudor buildings near where I live where the owners have done this. Here’s some ideas.

I like the pale grey too. Hitchin is full of ancient black painted timbered buildings though, Sonia so can understand why the locals can’t cope ;-)

Thanks for those pics Sonia, that’s exactly what I was thinking. I think we’ll go for it. Does anyone know any programs I can use to visualise the different colours. I’ve tried the dulux app but it’s rubbish!

Hi there, I think painting the render pale grey and the timber beams a couple of shades darker should be OK and still work with the red brick and dark roof. Maybe also paint the solitary oak door black, or the same colour as the timber beams to pull it altogether?

Several of the timbered properties in Hitchin are not black, some have faded to a grey which looks rather nice.

Town centre still predominantly black and white though :-(

No, not from Hitchin, I live closer to London but know loads of people there due to work.

Grey is the colour that oak weathers to if left untreated so for me it feels like a natural choice for Tudor style frontages.

With brand new black windows I would vote against pale grey woodwork. It doesn't suit the brick nor the window frames..

The white black contrast is nice, but I'd suggest black with a slightly tan/greige inbetween for a more earthy feel:

Yes I think we've all got one of those groups, Sonia. Like to post pictures of dog poo and badly parked cars on a daily basis!! Been to Hitchin myself some years ago and seem to remember a nice place called The Sun Inn and a fabulous farmers market.

Sorry to hijack original post. Happen to like the softer grey wood myself as well. Perhaps it would be useful to get a mock up done before you make your mind up.

Really liking rinq’s ‘all the way’ black and white suggestion!

That would definitely be my choice.

It sympathetically retains the original style yet is obviously contemporary.

@rinked what software are you using for the design changes? I have a similar dilemma with my house. I want to remove the mock tudor style beams and render leaving a brick plinth under the ground floor window line. I want to mock it up electronically so I can see what it will look like and choose the correct colour to complement the windows and doors which are RAL 1019 Grey Beige

@Giles M, why want to remove that wood? It adds a LOT of character! You could paint it though, but it looks stunning as it is! Rendering it would leave a dull smooth surface, while the tudor and brick is a lovely combination.
