What colour tile should I use?

Hello, I was wondering if I can have some help please on what colour tile I should use over the cream paint in the kitchen. I am getting so fed up of splashing food on the walls (I had a particularly bad incident when blending plums the other day, after this photo was taken!) The kitchen joins on to the living room so I am trying to work out what colour I should use and where the tilling should stop. Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you!

Hi Lorna,

Ok so there's a couple of things to consider so firstly you have an upstand already and tiles and upstand's are not normally mixed together. I totally understand your dilemma though and I would recommend a couple of things.

1) It might be a better idea to paint the walls in specialised kitchen/bathroom paint which can be wipeable and does not leave any marks on the wall. Trust me this is what I have done in my own kitchen and it works a treat. I highly recommend Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion: https://www.farrow-ball.com/our-finishes/modern-emulsion

Secondly you may want to consider painting the units a contrasting colour and give it a modern look if you are considering painting the walls.

2) If you really are dead set about having tiles you might want to consider going for a simple cream tile and in keeping with the current colours if you are not painting the units. Definitely not a job to do without either a structural engineer or a very reliable builder - if you're in the UK you'll need one who can "sign it off" with building regs anyway (different from planning permission) as any new owner can ask to see this and solicitors are quite often insistent. This is not a job to sort out yourself, as has huge implications, not just downstairs, but upper floors too - take no chances. But honestly, any good builder worth his weight should be able to do the work, although many will consider it too small to bother with - get another recommended builder!

Personally I think an LVT is a more practical product but if I were qa supplier I would probably want to promote porcelain tiles because it is less likely to limit wood options with the kitchen and the potential profit from a porcelain tile is potentially higher than a LVT.
