Garage or big shed? Brick built, wood or pre-fab?

Hi guys, I need to replace my garage. I'll be getting a concrete pad laid in a better position, but not sure whether to go with brick and block double skin (pricey?), a pre-fab garage or a large shed?

Hi Hugh, a pic would be nice. My 2 yr old garage is single brick, and very sturdy. Our garage is in the garden accessed by a service road out the back. We chose bricks because we couldn’t get a lorry up the service road to deliver the wood or metal sheets for a prefab one, which would have been cheaper. The window was a freebie off Facebook and it has a flat roof and electric garage doors out the back. Cost £15,000.

Here's an update on the work. I've finished the pebbledash first coat, and the painter did the fascias, soffits, door and window. The green I chose came out a lot darker than I thought, but never mind. What do you think? What's left to do is add some nice pots in front, put up the guttering (I'm going to do that now), another coat of the white masonry paint, and of course the most important part, put a cat image in the window!

thanks all for your input. Update:- - Moved most of the excess pots now except the ivy ones (but put those in smaller dark grey tubs instead so more discreet). - Getting a price for a new window to match the rest - Have been busy jet-washing the back garden & decking down as we are going to look at removing the big old slabs on the corner decking and putting some large slate black stepping stones around to break up all the "cat litter" ;) ha ha. Then paint the decking grey (just started a thread asking for colour advice on these). So the garage.... HELP turns out there is a paint for the uPVC if I can't replace that large monstrosity that is the fascia board, but I need advice on colours please? Really wish I had had a grey door put in now instead of black but that means the garage will have to be a combo of black & white or all black or leave all white. I don't think I can add grey can I if I have white windows and a black door???? what do you all think??

I can imagine you must be demoralised because you can’t afford what you were dreaming of but I have got to say I get excited about this kind of house, it’s amazing high ceilings and finding one at an end so the garden is not shaded is brilliant. I think you could have a beautiful space if you put bifold doors between the kitchen and the lean to, raise the floor in the lean to so it’s the same height as the kitchen and have the same flooring for a feeling of continuity. The bifolds satisfy building regs as you don’t need to rebuild the lean to, you have a dining space for all but the coldest days and when it is cold you just close the bifold doors.

I would recommend, without qualification, a Dan-Wood home. I had one built and after completion of the foundation to the Dan -Wood requirements, the first lorry from Poland, plus troops. arrived at 0700 hrs on the Monday. I moved into the fully completed eco house six weeks and three days later. All the builders were trained in the factory and worked quietly and consistently. As the build developed the trades changed to the building needs, electrical, plumbing, roofing etc. The first lorry had the downstairs sections and was loaded in Poland in the order required on site. Nothing touched the ground. The next lorry from Poland arrived within five minutes of the first leaving. The house was pressure tested on completion and lost only 2% leakage. I cannot understand why we tolerate building in silly brick sizes glued together with mortar and dependent on the 'training' and 'skill' of the labour. Everything was delivered and installed in an organised and managed way and I would be happy to discuss further if anyone is interested. Dan-Wood also took care of the planning for £600 which is remarkable. There is a 20 year structural warranty included as well. There is a prejudice against timber framed houses in the UK for reasons that escape me but these houses are factory made and everything fits, all rooms are square and exactly as the plan dimensions. Photographs would be really helpful Hugh, not only of the area where you plan to put the concrete pad, but also of your house and garden showing the style, etc.
