Cabinets with filled in crown molding?
I have a dilemma. My kitchen renovation is nearly complete, but the builders installed the cabinet molding incorrectly. They were supposed to use filler and then take the molding up to the ceiling. Instead they installed the molding to the top of the cabinets and left about a 4 inch gap between that and the ceiling. I'm now wondering if it's worth it to ask them to redo it, or if I should keep it as is. The big complicating factor is that we didn't used to have any crown molding in the kitchen, and they installed it throughout...without asking if that's what we wanted. So now we have crown molding at the ceiling that would not totally match the crown molding at the top of the cabinets. (Though I guess we could ask them to make it match?)

4 years agoThe ONE thing I have to have in a kitchen is cabinets to the ceiling. I love the built in look. We had the same exact thing happen to us in our last kitchen renovation. There was a 3" gap at the top and we thought it would look ok but I immediately knew it needed to change after seeing it when they put the crown on. They came back the next day to build up the crown to the ceiling and it was 1000x better. They were able to save most of the crown they pulled off and I think charged a few hundred dollars for extra materials and labor. BUT for you if they were supposed to do that from the beginning I'd have them come back and do it, they shouldn't charge you.
Here's my last kitchen you can see the crown and the extension of cabinet above. The crown sat right on top of the doors at first.

Comments (80)Here in Oregon, we refer to a den as more of a manly, comfy room. Part office, part tv room. The family room is like a living room but with a tv. A living room is generally more formal and used for casual conversation. For a house that doesn't have a family and living room both, the words are interchangeable though, which can get confusing for people used to more formal living. We are fairly informal around here. I would assume drywall is like plasterboard. When houses are built, the framing goes in, filled with insulation on exterior walls, then all of the studs get covered with big sheets of drywall that then gets all the seems "taped" and smoothed and then texture is sprayed over it all, then paint. Drywall isn't used in all rooms, there is a special kind called green board used in bathrooms, which is mold resistant. Cement board is also used on any walls or floors where tile is being applied, like bathrooms or kitchens, which is also mold resistant. I am loving this subject! Comments (10)You able to post other walls in the room to get better idea of room layout ? The tv istoo big for narrow chimney breast and will look odd. Don’t take this wrong way but the shelves you had done look too thin seems like the bowing a bit due to amount of things on them carepenter should have made them alot more chunky to give it that modern look or put a thick trim on front of each shelf to give it that illusion also would work nice with the cabinets below you have . I would put a fake fireplace. With nice round mirror and if possible move the tv to one of the other walls in the room colour wise I either paint all walls pure white or nice soft grey like cloud burst By crown or dulux or elephants breath. white personally will just lighten up the whole room giving it contemporary look. Comments (11)Yes. But with built-ins the crown molding should continue along the bookcases too, so closing off a small section of the top won't look bad. If you don't want to go all the way up, close off the top section, flush with the chimney and column, so your crown molding goes in a straight line. 2. No gaps. But you shelving will need to be a bit deeper then the chimney, because you don't want your books sticking out. If you want some more space between your mantle and the books, have the builder extend the chimney wall sideways, see example: If you want your built-ins recessed, the chimney should be filled out.. I would suggest a wider mantle base, from unit to unit, because these little carpet corners will most likely look off.. 3. Have a little less shelves where you want to mount your tv. Pop up? That would be a waste of the cabinet below. And doors at that height won't look great too. Have some doors on the lowest section, to balance out the visuals of 'filling' and 'furniture'. 4. 4 years agolast modified: 4 years ago@itsourcasa Here's more of the kitchen. It's a galley kitchen (obviously!) that leads into a hallway with a pantry and laundry. The laundry used to be in a little open closet with a doorway, and we had that wall removed which made a huge difference, but you can't really tell in photos. One shot shows looking from the back door through the laundry hallway back into the kitchen. And another shot shows the backsplash tile we THINK we've landed on. Still waiting on Dallas White countertops to be installed next week.

4 years agoThat scribing and coping detail between the two crowns is outside the skill set of your average cabinet installer and finish carpenter these days. Some won’t even have a clue as to what’s being talked about. That’s a true upper end cost and detail that doesn’t happen with most builder projects. Because you have to have someone expensive with that skill set. It costs you extra. Because it’s a non standard upgrade.
What usually happens is that no one working for any builder can do that, and so you get an ugly plinth block separating the two different profiles.

4 years agoHi Joyce, exciting renovation! But a bummer about this issue. It's a pretty substantial mistake and is far from a visually, or functionally, resolved kitchen because of it. As many others have pointed out, this is most definitely the contractor's responsibility to remedy. I hope he/she is not pressuring you to think otherwise! @GreenDesigns brings up a good point about the crown profiles matching. This is an important architectural element that helps the kitchen feel truly built-in/integrated. Below is a nice example of above cabinet crown done properly.
