IKEA Hemnes Bed - Advice Please :)

Hello!

I am wanting to paint my IKEA Hemnes bed (this isn't my bed but just an image I found online, it is the white wash one, not gloss) and was wondering how to go about painting this a dark almost-black/charcoal colour. What kind of paint would you suggest (chalk, matt?) and would a roller and paintbrush do the job? I want it to look as smooth as possible. Do I need to sand and use a primer?

If anyone has any tips or tricks, that would be much appreciated!

I am from the UK and so will need products available over here.

Hi Harriet. There are methods to painting this bed frame but it’s a long and time consuming laborious job. You’d need to sand it as it has a lacquer finish. Then prime with a dark undercoat 2 coats, sand again lightly, satinwood, eggshell or matt furniture paint 2-3 coats (don’t use chalk paint...awful stuff), and depending on how the finish is you may want to put a coat of clear water based varnish/lacquer or clear wax to protect from chipping.
Given that this bed also comes pre done in black stain I would sell the one you have on eBay, gumtree etc. and use the money (and time) saved on all the paints and buy the black version.

I think Rachelmidlands is spot on if the other ikea colour is ok. If not, it is worth a try but definitely not with chalk paint. A few years back we built a window seat using some Hemnes tv benches and I wanted it to match my hand painted wardrobes (!) Anyway I lightly sanded (black and decker) the finish just to give new paint something to grip. I then did a coat of a really good primer - I used mythic but I know Zinnser is good too. Perhaps go to a specialist decorator centre and ask for the best they have. I then did 2 coats of a Dulux trade paint to match wardrobes. Worked perfectly and lasted until we sold the house- and the seat was considered a feature!

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. Very much appreciated. Appologies for the poor quality drawing. I thought it would be a bit clearer than that. I'm not very good technically! You are right JenP, when the extension was added they moved the window to the back and made it into interconnecting bedrooms as they had a disabled child. So that room now has no window. The bathroom window is also facing into the extension. Not ideal but we thought we could install a light catcher in the roof and reduce the size of the window by installing some opaque glass blocks to borrow some light from the extension. The current lounge was actually two rooms when built, the one on the left with the bay window was the lounge as it has a fireplace with back boiler and the other a bedroom. We were thinking the same about making the lounge into two bedrooms so that we have our living areas at the back. Seems logical. We do like your idea JenP of the U shape living area that seems do able but the issue we have with the rear of the bungalow is the very limited space. We had considered maybe knocking down the excisting non matching extensions and rebuilding it a bit larger but that maybe to costly. We have a couple of local builders lined up to give us quotes but we are still undecided as to what is our best option. I'm guessing by the layout, and fireplaces that it's an old Victorian building. The only thing to remember with flats is that unless you are the sole Freeholder as well as the leaseholder, then you have to get permission from the Freeholder for just about anything internally with regards moving / knocking down walls. I would say, that the best thing to do would be to have a small archway from lounge ( bed 2 ) in to the kitchen diner. The next owner can easily re-instate the wall if they want 2 bedrooms back.....................obviously 2 beds is more valuable than 1. Moving the Kitchen to the bedroom is a better idea and should be achievable as there is clearly drain access out the back near the toilet. If you were to do that you end up with a great sized lounge / diner in the biggest room. You have to take the advice of a structural engineer though, due to it being a flat as you need to know what's structural. I personally nearly always run things past a local estate agent to confirm that my changes are going to add value. I would imagine that a large / spacious well layed out one bed is going to be similar in value to a cramped 2 bed.

Hello Steph, I would reduce the size of the stairs and add the extra space gained to the kitchen area. Add some glass doors between the hall and kitchen so that you can see right through when walking through the front door. Similarly use glass internal doors between the living room and the rear seating area. This allows some formality to the living room to be retained. Remove the chimney breast. at the rear. Downstairs showers are rarely used so that front bathroom could be modified to incorporate a small utility room and cloakroom. Washers and dryers can be stacked. My children shared and were happy with that until they were 10 and 8 so allow for that. There seems to be a lot more washing when they are young so a bedroom could be used for drying for a few years. I had one client with teenagers who lived in their bedrooms before work started. she commened after the house was opened up that they were now happy to be downstairs and enjoy the company although whilst still on their laptops.

Hi I'm back! I don't know if updates are useful at this point but I have changed my mind so many times about the best layout for this space..is this normal?! Having lived with the idea of an island for a bit I just wasn't loving the flow of the room and the kitchen situated at opposite sides of the room, and dining table floating in the middle. The room is too narrow now that I've reinstated the wall to have at least 1m around the sides of an island that would comfortably fit 3 stools. Worktop runs were also proving tricky. The problem is there are two necessary thoroughfares in the space - to the living room and to the garden (as pictured). So had to think out the box a bit. Played around with a peninsula layout and it has really grown on me. Added shallow larder storage too. Hob placement tbc. Any obvious alternative layouts that I have not thought of? (also, I know fridge next to oven is not ideal, we currently have this in our kitchen and find it is fine. Fridge placement has been the biggest headache!)

Here is a close up of painted Hemnes cropped from my estate agent details! I just remembered that I removed legs so it was low enough, added a bead to match wardrobes and changed knobs as well - I'd been quoted £3k to match the existing wardrobes, so did the Ikea hack for about £200. It was the white Hemnes and changed it to grey. I got advice on the primer and paint at a Dulux decorator centre-as rachelmidland says, you would probably need two coats of dark primer to go from white to black.
