Freestanding bath or shower bath?

We're having a new family bathroom fitted and we are trying to decide between having a freestanding bath with a shower attachment within the taps or a showerbath with a shower. We're a family of 3, myself, husband and 5 year old daughter and we have a shower in our downstairs bathroom. Has anyone had just a bath fitted in the main bathroom and regretted not putting a shower in? And how did you find this as your family grew up?

I grew up in a house with a shower over the bath with a shower screen- as a teenager I almost never took a bath.
Personally I would choose the shower again because they are fast (important for a busy family) and of course showers use less water

For me my concern would be rinsing hair. We have an en-suite and then a bathroom that has a shower cubicle and also a bath but I insisted on a shower attachment within the taps to rinse mine and the kids long hair.

Definitely! I think these can work fantastically, but only if the room is large enough to carry it. Freestanding baths in bedrooms work well when the room is not already over crowded with furniture. If you have a separate dressing room and the bedroom is still large enough, then sure, they can really make a feature of the room.

I also think the last plan could work if you change the door and you might need a bifold shower door (too early to add up!). I have to say I agree with the previous comment, freestanding baths are difficult to clean around. Mine is clawfoot which I assume yours won't be be so you don't need to try and squeeze under (!) but it's really hard to clean behind! I don't know what material you're looking at for the Bath but make sure the floorboards are strong enough to hold and also that it fits through all the doorways as they can be wider than standard.

Hi, Need a bit more info; Is it a traditional bath or modern? Have you got a picture/link? Do you want a hand shower by the bath for cleaning and use in bath? Is the bath surrounded by stud walls or does it have to be floor standing? What is your budget? Vado you can be looking at £600+, Hansgrohe £1800+ but you can get discounts. Cheaper, unsufficiently supported floor taps are wobbly so I'd really avoid. Sounds more like a modern tub bath to me - would be great to see pictures :)

We have an en-suite with just a shower in the master bedroom, we also have a large shower in the family bathroom, showers more suit us.

However, we put a bath in the other en-suite, but that is rarely used, it's mostly used for relieving the aches & pains of a long , tough cycle ride or from gardening on the OH's part.

That said, we're toying with the idea of putting a bath and a standalone shower in the master en-suite when we get round to re-doing it.

Hi Helen. I had a shower in another bathroom so I didn't need another shower (family of three like you). I installed a large free-standing bath in the second bathroom and enjoyed relaxing bath-times with glass of wine and candles. It was the biggest luxury. And the best way to wind down after a hard day. I've moved now but I wish I could have the space to do the same again, I miss that bath like anything!

We have a freestanding bath without a shower in our main bathroom but have showers in 2 en-suites. We considered having a fitted bath & separate shower (bit of a squeeze) but ended up going for just the freestanding bath with shower attachment on the tap. We don’t regret it.

Will it be Ok if your future 15 year old daughter is walking downstairs in pjs to have a shower at 11am on morning because she prefers the shower downstairs? What’s the route to the shower in relation to public space where you are entertaining friends? will guests have to queue to use the loo while she is bathing?
We have en-suite with stand alone bath with hand held shower and separate cave shower - luxury by previous owner. Bath rarely used but looks amazing. Our teenagers share main bathroom with shower over bath. As Johnathan says speed is the essence of the game - bath rarely used by eldest only, shower is their preference. Another question is whether you are in forever home, or may sell in the future - bath preferred by families with very small children and many families see altering bathroom to reinstall bath with power shower for adults a game changer due to expense. The answer to your issue must include how your family like to bathe, the future of your home and the position of your downstairs bathroom.

Depends on the space at hand, I guess. Personally I prefer a separate shower and a built-in bath (less floor to clean). We use our bath once or twice a month, even with our preschooler. But like mentioned above, some soaking when your body aches is THE reason we have it. Could never live without the shower though! Quick rinse before bed or when just awoke (or sweaty due to other reasons).
