Need advice on patio cover - do I want irreconcilable things?

Hello,

I recently moved to a nice ground floor appartement with a back garden. I feel right at home here, but I have a great need for privacy.

I want to transform my patio and back garden into a secluded, isolated, peaceful place, just for me. A kind of sanctuary, if you will.

That's why I am looking to cover my patio, mainly to block inlooking. I want a solution that is more than a mere canopy, but less than building an actual extra room. I want it to be a midway point between the living room indoors, and the outdoors at the back.

The difficulty is, that I am really enamored with the open view I get from my living room. You can see it in the last picture: open skies and lines of beeches.

This seems wholly incompatible with actually covering my patio. I was thinking of a transparent material, but this doesn't actually block inlooking, which is the primary purpose for building it. Then I was thinking of adding a layer of one-way vision foil to the transparent roof, or maybe slats arranged in such a way that they would block vision from the other apartments, but allow the light and the open sky views to come into the living room.

I was wondering if any of you guys understand what it is I'm looking for, with me being unfamiliar with all the options, and if you could suggest some solutions.

How about a pergola? You can have climbing plants to introduce shade and privacy and have fairy or festoon lights in the evening.

I understand what you mean, you want privacy without a heavy structure sapping the light and view. How about a metal canopy? Some pictures below. Of course the best way to make the garden more private is planting. A tree near the bottom will provide screening, but ensure it’s not too near buildings or paths in case of root problems. Planting some shrubs along the perimeter fences will help too.

Hi all, Thank you very much for being honest and so helpful. I have quotes from a professional kitchen painter who has requested for the cabinets to first be primed off site, so I contacted someone in a business park, who do all sorts of things on wood, asking them if they would spray prime it. Now I have also got a quote for 'only spray priming' and also 'spray paint to finish'. the spray painting by this business park type of place is nearly half the price of the hand painter, not to forget for him I also need to add cost of spray priming. So it boils down to this: spray paint or hand paint? can someone show me pictures or a link to a spray painted and a hand painted kitchen? Man about the house, I like your spray painted look, is that the finish I can expect from the spray painters? Thanks!

Hi ED, still working on it! Have developed this little seating area which gets the sun from 6.30 ish so perfect for breakfast & morning coffee! This is where we had the playhouse before. Obviously need to plant up the area around it. We’ve just had a large tree taken down. Don’t like to take trees down but it was a pine & blocked so much light so nothing would grow beneath it. Also have been building a stone wall to face our lower patio area & we have steps to our patio door. Next big job is the patio when I can find one I like!

@rach1922 - you are quite right that people harvesting Indian sandstone were exploited, as well as the use of child labour. For this very reason many UK suppliers have installed their own staff in their own quarries to ensure this does not happen. So basically there are companies who have total control to ensure the Stone is ethically harvested, such as Marshall’s, London Stone etc. I used Global Stone who supply many builders merchants. Sadly, we as a society exploit many people in many countries so that we can enjoy cheap clothing etc. It’s a minefield.

I wonder if something like this may suffice ? But before you make any purchase -might be an idea to go through any caveats you may have in your agreement, if you you live in a multi home building.
