Help! Hallway and stairs laid bare, ready for Houzz overhall!
Comments (8)Thank you, all, for the input! Finally, following some electrical surprise that needed sorting, this project is fully underway. The hall, stairs and landing have been completely stripped of their nicotine-addled liner paper, and are starting from bare plaster. This means we'll likely take advantage of the once-in-a-blue-moon super-smooth walls and just paint them white, making a feature out of the stair and landing carpet (hall flooring to come next year when we do the rest of the ground floor). The long-wall is north-east facing, and I'd like to be bold with colour, and am leaning toward blue green for dengue shui reasons! Where can I get a Crucial Trading Audrey-esque stair runner in a cooler colour set? Further, my partner has gotten into the idea of being quirky and purchased a set of WWII paratrooper jump lights to install above the door to the downstairs loo (now knows as "the War Room" or "the jump seat"...). So now my bright green mosaic WC (that we'll eventually extend into a wet room) is begging for metro tiles instead. I still want a pop of colour through the door... I was thinking a pretty strong green (again for feng shui reasons) that goes with the stair carpet, and white hexagon tiles or black something-or-others on the floor. Thoughts...??? It's the coordination between spaces that is throwing me!...See MoreHallways/stairs colour- Help!
Comments (14)I’m reluctant to paint the bannisters anything but white and varnish as that’s what they’ve always been and I like the smoothness of hundreds of hands touching them (it’s my grandmothers house and the house my mother was born in...) but am keen to paint the stairs. The bottom stairs currently have FB light blue on them which is nice but I was hoping to go a little darker without darkening too much- maybe Oval Room blue? And my other question is about skirting boards- I’d be inclined to do them white but would that look strange on the stairs if I have painted stairs, white skirtings and then painted walls up to dado height? Thanks again for help... painting really is the hardest bit...!...See MoreDark/small hallway and stairs, looking for colour ideas?
Comments (9)Hi Lucy - here are some Photoshop tryouts of some of the more daring hues in Farrow and Ball and Little Green (F&B 'Arsenic', Little & Green 'Leather' pink...) I can't vouch for the accuracy of online colour charts as you'll see them on your PC, but these should give you a broad idea of what you could do if you're keeping the beige carpet and dark grey paint (which I've extended to the skirting to make it easier to put stronger colours near the beige). A lot depends on the other colours you have in your house, and whether you want a 'warm' feel or a 'cool' one. For the 'off white' (which should show dirt less than pure white) I'd suggest using either a pale version of the carpet colour or a pale version of the band colour. If you want to go all out for really bright colours - or anything in the yellow or orange range - the beige carpet would have to go. Obviously, the band colour could be picked up in picture frames or other decorations. Hope this helps....See MoreStaircase in victorian hallway to pain or not
Comments (14)We agonised for ages over whether we should paint our stairs in our Edwardian or not as they were horrible 90s orange varnished pine for the most part. The banister and newel post however are a nice oak in a darker colour. We painted the walls in the hall F&B Old White and used a complementary white called Slipper Satin (more of a cream really) on the treads and risers and spindles and left the banister and newels as they were. The colours have given us a classic but neutral scheme that shows off our original tiled floor. Looking at yours though, the newels, spindles and banister are absolutely lovely and if you are lightening up the entire space anyway, it would be a beautiful feature. If you do decide to paint then you need to decide if you want to highlight the feature or tone it into the rest of the decor. I would show it off if it were mine. :) I would suggest a runner on the stairs too actually, makes even more of a statement. Good luck!...See Moreobobble
