Fixing onyx to an island in this way will create a beautiful feature and it's something we're very familiar with. The main considerations are around the back lighting. The stone must be attached in such a way so as not to create shadows and dark patches. Equally, the right lights and spacing must be used to create an even light throughout the panel. Another consideration is future access to the lights in case they need changing. Thanks for the comment @Ellie. Yes the door into the kitchen is top left. What you have suggested is actually what is on the plan. The problem we're having is how to join the tall bank of units on the right of the pic to the base units (large pan drawers) at the top of the pic. Will having a tall corner unit look too overpowering? I can't get a good 3d picture on the planner I am using.

A structural engineer prepares a detailed instruction for how to do it, a builder does the work and the building regs people at the council make sure the builder has done what was required. For what you are doing it’s likely an architect is unnecessary.
