Basement Insulation - EPS Beads?

Hello,

I need to improve the insulation in my basement following the completion of a refit and have been told that l can inject EPS Beads into the cavity to help? This would need to be done through the internal plasterboard and not an external wall as typical of this process? As this injection process is internal l am a little nervous to go ahead without opinion from other trade experts? Can anyone give me some reassurance that this process will indeed work?

Hi John! I've just noticed your message, we are away on holiday atm (lucky you, it's cloudy today so I have time for Houzz :))). We agreed with the builder to use the original floorboards as the base and add joists/ beading on top to support the aluminium sheet and pipes (see the photos in the ideabook), as the height of the rooms could take a loss of some 10cm. In the (extended) kitchen and basement, they first laid down thick insulation boards, then the pipes, then poured screed on top. They insulated all the ceilings (or floors!!) and used plasterboard with foil on it to ensure maximum heat radiance. At our request, they also 'hung' pipes on the (basement) ceiling underneath the original Victorian mosaic tiles, so the entrance hall gets heated that way too. Except for one bathroom (where we used limestone) the other bathrooms, kitchen and basement have ceramic tiles. The limestone is cracked now, after 18 months since we moved in - fortunately it doesn't look too bad; no issues with the ceramic tiles. We went for engineered wood in the rest of the house - they used some special glue that allows movement. I have no idea how many zones we have, there are 18 thermostats in the house (I remember that from the invoice :)), each in every room and halls/ landings. I know that because our kitchen is quite large, they used two circuits to cover the room efficiently (but one controller/ thermostat), same in the master bedroom. At the time, we researched and discussed a lot about environmentally friendly alternatives to gas/ electric boiler - however, living in the middle of Cardiff with only 50sqm garden, we were very limited in our options. We also considered solar panels, but couldn't get planning consent, as we live in a conservation area. One more point: our last house was roughly the same size as this one, but heated with radiators on a combi boiler - our gas-electric bill is now two thirds less than it was in the old house. I'd say go for it! Research what works best for your house, discuss with the installers - some are very knowledgeable and helpful and do it! I honestly love our home and don't think I ever want to live somewhere with radiators again! Hope this helps - good luck!

Stephen Edwards makes a really good point about the thermostat, and it works both ways (ie causing the heating to come on when you don't need it, as well as going off when you do!). Thermostats are often placed in the hallway, which can be colder than the rest of the house by cold air coming in through a draughty front door. It sounds like you have systemic problems to solve, but once those are sorted out you could look at draughtproofing, paying particular attention to anywhere that affects the thermostat. If you identify your letterbox as draughty you could look at fitting one of our letterbox solutions (we do a lovely stainless steel front letterplate as well as an inner letter box draught excluder), and if you have a pet that's going in and out through a draughty, rattly old catflap we do a pet door too. Hello, We need to improve the insulation of a basement apartment. The ideal solution would be able to inject the material into the cavity due to it not being practical to remove all of the plasterboard. I have read some information on Polystyrene Beads that seem to be ideal in terms of being able to instal the material into the cavity. However there has not been many reviews to convince me of the final result in terms of heat retention? Can any one help advise me if this is indeed a practical solution or if there is an alternative method. NB. The attached photo shows the inner recess where we could gain access the void to pour the polystyrene beads. Thanks for your help. Robert

Minnie, you have impeccable taste, everyone on Houzz agrees so don’t even try to dispute it! :)) Ikat is another great option, I’ll add it to my list. I’d visited a couple of curtain makers and had one come around to measure... While I am now more clear about either to have curtains or blinds in whichever room, choosing fabrics is still a struggle... I came home with some 12 samples books and only managed to confuse myself even further. Andrew is good at telling me what he doesn’t like/want, but when I ask for a decision between 2 options, he just says ‘whatever you want’ even when I had just finished telling him I can’t choose... Sorry, rant over; I think I am becoming less adventurous than I used to be and it frustrates me...
