It’s a Cycas revoluta or the common name is a Sago Palm It requires an acid soil. It is quite spikey so don’t put it close to where you sit or walk

It looks a very good start. Now think about adding more interest to the gravel, perhaps by interspersing the 'lollipop trees' with neat but interesting shrubs. These could be scented such as Sarcoccoca (winter scent), Daphne odora (spring scent)... And adding a border in front of the house with appropriate plants. I would need to now the orientation of the garden and whether the soil is alkaline/acid/neutral and clay/loam/sand/chalk before recommending plants. If you do not need to park a vehicle in front of the house, and with the right soil and aspect you could add a rectangular herb garden.

What tree would you plant in a front border?

North facing will limit what can grow there, but luckily there is lots that will. Be careful with trees as some will become enormous and root spread can damage footpaths and driveways. I know this from experience when I planted a tiny Silver Birch that grew to 50ft and tore up my neighbours path, oops! Good small trees/shrubs are Cornus kousa, Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum), Viburnum tinus and Photinia. You can underplant with ferns, primulas, Anemones and snowdrops which all like shade. What about some Hebes? They are evergreen and there are many varieties that usually form a mound shape. Usually have purple or white flowers. I love Euonymus’s too. If you want a bit of frillyness, then spreading shrub roses are lovely. They’re not evergreen but they give a good punch of colour and don’t grow tall. I have the one called Laura Ashley, but The Fairy and Ballerina are lovely too. The first two pics are Hebes and the last is the Laura Ashley rose.
