Ugly built in wardrobe

Any suggestions on how we might transform this ugly built in wardrobe? Sadly ripping it out is not an option. I don’t know whether making it a feature or painting it the same colour as the wall is the best thing to do but something must be done!

Comments (15)I would paint over the entire thing in the color you like and add new hardware that speaks to you and is more in line with the tone of the mood for the room you are planning to create. Comments (6)hi Jamie, I see the problem you have with the doors opening. if you mark the 18- 20mm space allowing the doors to open you can have the skirting against the mdf and mitre it to finish at the door line. Comments (4)What are the door made of? are they solid wood? Is that a veneer finish? I’d sand off the old finish, prime with Zinsser 1-2-3 and finish with 2 coats of Zinsser Perma-White. You can get the Perma-White mixed to different RAL colours online. Pop on some new handles and hey presto! Personally I’d get rid of drawers, keep the mirror and fit in a worktop off-cut in there with a nice chair and wall lamp or spots above the dressing table. You could further modernise the doors by mounting them so they fit flush. You’d have to change the hinges to those similar to kitchen cabinet hinges. Comments (1)I think thats fine. We have a room where the wardrobe is build in behind and over and on the other side of the door (so you almost walk through a small tunnel if you see what I mean). We made sure the door could open slightly wider than 90 degrees by leaving a couple of inches spare and you need to make sure your door handle can’t hit the wardrobes....See Morekeswing

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoI would be tempted to attach very statement long oak handles to create emphasis, something like these. The upper cupboards may look better without so they disappear a little. I think it's the upper cupboards that date it.
