Help need on what colours to paint fence

We're coming towards the end of our garden project - just the turf, few bits and planting to do. I'm stuck on what colour to paint the fence though. Feel it should be two different shades as they are two very different areas and the patio is very much an extension of a modern kitchen. I've trawled the internet for images but still at a loss of what to do - any help gratefully received!

Your fence is lovely as it is - beautiful. If it were mine I would apply some kind of natural wood preservative/oil and that’s it. Problem with painting a fence is it will soon peel and fade so will need redoing time and time again.

I agree with Sonia, your fence complements the cool grey and gives warmth, it looks great. One thing I have found with natural wood fencing is that tonally, green shrubs and planting can get lost against it, which is why many people paint their fences a darker tone. However, planting some really dark shrubs such as smoke bush can really make a difference and provide a backdrop for more zingy planting.

Light colours always help to make a garden pretty so maybe try a pastel colour. I'm personally in love with a sort of light mint colour, this works really well with white (but any pastel will) cornflour is nice too for gardens as it is more of a contrast to the leaves. Growing a climber up some trellis on the wall might be an idea too, honeysuckle smells very sweet and attracts butterflies but any climber again will work. I have attached the mint colour I meant just for clarity, a word of caution would be that it can look a little clinical so to be used in moderation.

I think you already have a lot of grey. Definitely paint the shed though. As MATH says use Cuprinol Ducksback. Both me and my son have used it on our fencing and it really is fabulous easy to use stuff. Needs a minimum of 2 coats and is currently on offer at several shops. First coat takes longer to put on, then the second coat goes on really quickly. I think I’d be tempted to use black for the fence and a contrast on the shed. I have my side fences Silver Copse (grey) and the back fences Iris (dark blue).

Hi Roxy. Lovely big garden to work with! I'm no professional except trying to remodel my own garden and have two boys myself so know where you're at! Found a couple of pics with dark green fence, I think its a nice colour although maybe not as modern as dark grey. I've just painted my side fence dark grey and its really made the flowers (love white flowers) pop as would any dark colour. Like the blackboard idea too, here, a can of blackboard paint is fairly inexpensive and you could attach a piece of painted ply to the fence to have the option of removing later/ when the boys grow up a bit. Another idea is add decking to your garden, my boys would have loved this sandpit a few years ago! It all depends how much money you have to work with (as do most things in this life).. I have plenty of great ideas but not necessarily the budget to match!!

Silver copse cupinol is a dark grey... There is a darker grey urban slate personally think its too dark. I'd go with the silver copse for fencing will make your plants and flowers pop.... Also silver birch cupinol is a lighter grey... Check them colours out....

I agree that the wood tone works really nicely. If you are set on adding a wood stain I would choose a colour to compliment your render and then stain the pergola a dark colour

If you are set on painting then go with a contrasting colour to the paving, a darker tone of grey for the horizontal slats. As for paint I would choose the Valspa decking paint from B&Q as this is much better wearing and seems to have a better coverage than fencing paints. Also this being designed for decks it does not need as much repainting as fence paint and to some degree be washed down.

As for the fence around the lawn area it depends if you are planting around the borders or not.

Whatever you do there the fence will go green under the overhanging foliage and will need to be cleaned on a regular basis. If it was me I would be tempted to leave it to weather naturally as once you start painting a fence, you will always be painting it to keep it looking good.

Agree with others and say leave the fence as it is, it looks nice imo. Use a clear preservative if it hasn’t already had one. I would paint or stain the gazebo/pergola black as this will be a nice contrast and match your windows.
