Pineapple sage - autumn/winter care tips

My pineapple sage plant is shedding its leaves. They're turning yellow/brown. I water it every week so I think it may due to the temperature beginning to drop now.

I've read that you're suppose prune pineapple sages in autumn/winter and they will grow back in spring/summer. Would that apply to potted ones kept indoors?

Does anyone have any care advice please?

Hi Dom. I think it needs repotting into a bigger plant pot as this plant can grow fairly big. For indoor plants I always use a lining pot, a cheap plastic plant pot with holes for drainage then put this inside the more decorative pot which has no holes. A thin layer of grit inside the bottom of the outer pot also helps with drainage but not always necessary, especially if it’s in a dry spot. As for pruning, I couldn’t say but advice online says it’s usually done in spring when the weather starts to warm up. I’d repot it first and give it a small amount of plant feed as it might get a shock from being moved. Best of luck:) I have the blackcurrant sage and the scented leaves are fab.

Thanks Rachel!

Do you know why the leaves a re yellowing and falling off? I'm not really sure what else to do as I already water it once a week and I've placed it by the window so it gets sun.

How would you renovate this old mill?

We bought an old Mill house 4 years ago and are still decorating and renovating. I think we always will, but absolutely no regrets! I love it! I will confess that I have made a few mistakes, which we are now fixing, as we now know what we would like and what suits the building. I completely agree with the comments on lime plaster. All of the rooms are light but soft colours and I have fallen in love with Crown and Rose Authentic Chalk paint. We have dogs and I love the way that I can clean off any small tail wag splatters and the paint looks brand new afterwards. We have lots of beams and stone, so have decided to go for a rustic but comfy look, but with a few rather French looking items, like a big French dresser in the dining room. Light walls in soft whites and creams, which don't clash too much with the different stone and woods types. I have tried other colours, but it just doesn`t really look right and ended up going back to the neutrals. These houses have low ceilings and small windows, so keeping light was an important issue for us. The colours come from the cushions, throws and soft furnishings in sage greens and warm purples. The dining room, looks stark but rustic and interesting. Currently would like to find a large rustic wood or antler chandelier for above the table. Floors downstairs are currently old school quarry tiles in half and wooden floors in the nest, with a cheeky bit of rhino vinyl floor in the main hall. The quarry tiles are original, but long term, I would love to rip up the wood/vinyl and add in flagged floors, so been bothering our suppliers about how well under floor heating may work with flag stones... :) Upstairs is thick underlay, as when they built houses in that day, they didn`t really worry about sound travel, then carpeted. Best move I have ever made!!! Even when things go wrong, I don`t really care, as I am renovating for the love of it this time, not for money! Exciting times!!

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

Hello Moomin. Thank you for posting your query. A planting design takes time, weighing up the site, your style and maintenance. Year round structure for aesthetics as well as screening and privacy come first. Always a shame when planting is an afterthought after landscaping! However this is very common and I've had some experience of planting design commissions after landscaping has been done. My initial thoughts do not take into account many things which can't be conveyed in one photo provided here (as designers we take into account the various views within the garden amongst other things) but I will outline here a sketchy response to demonstrate some considerations. There have been some good suggestions made above. Jonathandb1972 has a good one, planting a carefully selected tree, so the canopy softens (but not hides) the view of the conservatory behind. Olive could be an option but depends on the aspect given that your a fellow Yorkshire resident! Alternatively there's Pyrus salicifolia, or Prunus lusitanica the latter responding particularly well to pruning to retain the size. Always talk to your neighbour about your careful choices and help them to understand that you've considered maintenance.... And the benefit of planting for them! For best results a planter at least 50cm deep and nearly as much wide to help a tree flourish. Deeper would be better. Keeping a collection of containers of the same/similar material would unify the view. Perhaps allowing a climber up the adjacent wall which faces you when descending the steps? A third container might fit in the corner in front of the downpipe? Although the dimensions of space available would determine if this is possible. The dark colour of the fence is receding and also provides a lovely neutral colour to show off the foliage of the specimen. A very rough sketch is shown here in a version of your photo below. I've just done it on the iPad so is a bit rough and ready. In order to avoid the tree becoming too much of a focal point (you're trying to avoid looking at the building behind) a bold evergreen plant to the left corner next to the steps would draw your eye within the garden. This could then be balanced out with another one to the right of the tree or possibly one up the steps against the fence. This all depends on scale and space available. This would be my first draft concept but might well come to a different response when seeing the garden for real. Happy planting!

Hi Dom. Could be a number of reasons why the leaves are turning yellow, perhaps it naturally wants to go dormant with the cooler weather. Could be a good opportunity to cut it back, re pot and take cuttings (apparently they root really easily).
