Shared Twin Boys Bedroom Layout, Storage and Feature wall Ideas!

Hello,

Need some help as I am not used to decorating!

I have twin boys (9 years old) sharing a room and their bunkbed is quite large (we can't afford to get a smaller one at this stage). One has chosen blue and the other yellow as a feature wall. I think the feature wall could be on the window wall, but I've read that a feature wall shouldn't compete with windows.

I also don't know how to get shelves, soft seating for reading, toy and clothes storage in the rest of the room. Any help would be appreciated. looking at kallax bench as an option, but think that might be too small and hard for them to sit on (even with a cushion). They are quite tall for their age. Also wondered if a couple of low chest of drawers instead of a large wardrobe may help the room feel bigger and give them space to put things on and play. They love lego, minecraft, avengers...

Both have pros and cons... option 2 as the bed doesn’t partially look as though it blocks the window so may make the room feel lighter? But option 1 feels like a larger space when you first walk in... I wonder if you could hang the door the other way? It might work better regardless.. I’m a fan of kallax as a bench it works really well and doesn’t feel too low. You could always put it on castors to make it taller and easier to move.

My first thought is that the bed looks a little close to the furniture across from the foot of it. I might try the bed on the window wall and instead of the piece on the wall that has the door, eliminate it and get two bedside table pieces with storage to accommodate whatever you were going to store in the piece across from the foot of the bed in your plan. I like beige and gray schemes in the bedroom too, and find some live green plants add a perfect spot of color, or perhaps a kind of acid green silk texture throw pillow. My suggestion is to browse Houzz photos and save the color schemes that you really love! Adding something sparkly will pep up a design that you think is too monochromatic as well - some silver or crystal bling? I added some bling-y chandeliers on either side of the bed in one of my bedrooms, which is fairly monochromatic in beige and gray tones. Some of the throw pillows also have a silvery touch in them.

Hi All! Many thanks for your help. Cariad Home Styling it was my first thought, but the bedroom door leand to a very nice hall, and from the hall you would only see the wardrobe side, which would look quite ugly. I suppose I could add a piece of victorian furniture in that end (something small and lovely).. I'll give it a try. Thanks! whirlligig the problem with this idea is that I have a beautiful cornice work, and floor to ceiling wardrobe will hide this feature! I cannot copy this cornice and add it to the wardrobe in the ceiling end, because they are not conventional... :( Feioi yes you are right. I could take a look and see how it looks with the bed opposite to the current wall, But I'm not sure it will be ok given that the door leading to the bedroom goes directly to the entrance hal... All Cabinets Ltd i Don't really know what the options would be in regards with bespoke furniture. Do you have something I could use as guide? Cheers!

Hello! I wonder, do you plan to replace all existing furniture or plan to keep bed, desk? It is good to know size of furniture to keep to know exactly what else we can fit into your space. In any case, I have quick rough sketch of possible layout. I would divide room on two areas casual where you sleep and get ready for a day and working/art and craft area. I would move bed on the wall, place bedside table with lamp and wardrobe for your clothes and shoes. When you enter your room, you should see something you really like to get positive moment as first impression. For example you can place open shelves from floor to the ceiling and place your art work, cool picture frames or whatever you like or as alternative place a chest of drawers and place wall art above it. Next to it closed storage to keep all your art/craft stuff tidy and then near window place your desk. Continuous storage will look too bulky above desk and also will block the light, so I would add another pair of shelves. And so, there is no dilemma around storage you were worried about.

Lovely Nic - Thank you :) No - If you have a downstairs WC then you don't need a family bathroom in my opinion either. It's all about you and how *you* use your home. I think it essential to have a facility for the guests downstairs (toilet and basin) but the rest is personal areas to you so should reflect you and your needs - like the kids with the showers! Great that that's taken care of. I love the feature window for the fields. I hope the other one gets passed (on the right) but if not a mirror on that side would help reflect the window the other side and give you the same impression but allow any storage you may require.

The first option seems to work better when you add furniture in? Given they'll be starting secondary school soon'ish I don't know whether a wardrobe and chest of drawers is a better option for their uniform? You can also use the bottom of the wardrobe for shoes, sports equipment etc and I'd pick a colour that blends into the wall. I personally wouldn't do 2 feature walls however use colour blocking to zone each of their spaces. Try and find a blue and yellow that work together and add a couple more complementary shades. I've added a couple of pics but there are loads online. You could do a geometric shape or border etc. Having their duvet in their colours may be an idea too. I would probably go for beanbags for seating which can go at the side of the bed when not in use. Is their room under the bed for baskets for toys? Maybe also shelves over the bedside table?

Gabby - We've just had the door and the light switch moved to the that side so that the door hangs that way! So we won't be shifting it back. I know what you mean though, but I suppose we are future proofing as it's always been awkward walking round the door to get in the room.

I really like your opinions and great knowledge. Kallax on castors, colour block, comic bean bags, all awesome ideas! With regards to layout I think we will put the bed in there and see what works, then we will assign a space and colour block! I did feel like full colour walls just aren't my thing so I am pleased to see an alternative.

Will their clothes need to go in there too?
And with lego you don't need a bench or beanbags, you need workspace! ;)

How tall is the ceiling?

I know! Lego is their life at the moment. I was thinking of low level chest of drawers to double up as a work top, but they do have another space in the house they can use, so they are very lucky that it doesn’t all have to go in there. Ceiling is 242 cm.

So their clothes are elsewhere and they don't need to do any homework in there?

My son (4.5) still has his lego in the living room, contained to a small table. But I can imagine two boys make more mess than one.. Still, I wouldn't want his lego to be in his bedroom. Bedrooms are mainly for sleeping, reading and relaxing (and making homework eventually).

I meant the all the lego doesn't have to go in their room! They have loads, but we store that elsewhere. Clothes, etc still need to go in there. Will probably do a display case for builds they'd like to keep. Yeah, I agree on the relaxing, reading side of things. We've lived on a building site for nearly 5 years, so this will be the first time they will have a bedroom to relax in, it's never had a fitted carpet, it had skirting with gaps and holes in the wall, so it really needs to be cosy for them. Probably won't make it to build lego come to think of it. Thanks for helping me think through!

Just for layout purposes.

How about two 80x210cm beds with storage underneath? (probably custom) Radiator would need boxing in (extra wide sill) and a ventilation grille. Closet is 100x40cm (pax?).

And here's the bunkbed with some sort of kallax window seat. Depth is 55cm in this layout. Again ventilation grille.

Perhaps just start with the paint, carpet, closet, shelves (quite high up) and bed. And then see if the boys like any other 'hard' furniture in there or are content with some pillows. Some of these low storage boxes could go under the bed for excess toys.

That's brilliant! Thanks @rinked. Amazing ideas. I really like the idea of the window seat and will try and get in the plan. I get the idea of avoiding the circus theme, but some days it would suit my clowns! ; )
